Edmonson Voice Report:
United Way of Southern Kentucky announced today that it is investing a total of $9,979 in Education, Health, and Safety Net programs and services for its July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022 funding period in Edmonson County. Eight local programs provided through five service providers will receive the allocated campaign dollars and donor designations.

To receive funding from United Way of Southern Kentucky, programs had to align with the four areas deemed most important by a community research project conducted by United Way that began in 2012 which included nearly 5,000 surveys, 55 Community Conversations, and large amounts of secondary data. The four broad areas of most concern were defined by the community as: Education, Income, Health, and Safety Net. Programs were also evaluated on the following IMPACT criteria: Innovative, Measured, Partnered/Collaborative, Accountable, Community-centered, and Transformative.

This includes an emphasis on programs that provide services within a best practices framework, that are collaborative and integrated into the fabric of other community education, income, health and safety net efforts, that consider the goals, needs and aspirations of the communities they serve, and that are innovative.

In October of 2021, organizations with programs impacting UWSK’s strategic imperatives in each of the defined Community Impact issue areas (Education, Income, Health, and Safety Net) were asked to submit a Letter of Intent indicating their desire to complete a full application request for funding. Across the region, 66 total Letters of Intent were submitted requesting funding. Upon review by the Letter of Intent Committee, 49 of those application that were submitted across the 10 county BRADD region were approved for funding.

Allocation dollars were determined based on the work of 97 volunteers working specifically in their home counties of Allen, Barren, Butler, Edmonson, Hart, Logan, Metcalfe, Monroe, Simpson, and Warren. In total, $1,013,758 will be invested across the 10 county BRADD region as part of the 2021/22 funding cycle.

In EDMONSON COUNTY, $9,979 was allocated by volunteers led by Edmonson County Chairs Craig Browning and Jennifer Bostick as follows:
  • EDUCATION: $5,508
Kindergarten Readiness:
Edmonson County FRYSC, Camp Kindergarten: $4,110
College & Career Readiness:
Junior Achievement, Prepared for Success: The JA At-Risk Elementary School Initiative: $1,398
  • INCOME: $1,000

Chalybeate Food Mart cuts the ceremonial ribbon at their Edmonson County Chamber event today.
Darren Doyle, story and photos:
While the Chalybeate Food Mart may not be new to joining the community, it is a new member of the Edmonson County Chamber of Commerce, and they celebrated today with friends and family.

Owners Manish and Nisha Patel said even though they've been in business for 6 years, no one had ever asked them about joining the Chamber until recently.

"When (Chamber Director) Greg (Hudson) asked us to join, I didn't know what it was," said Manish. "So I told him if it means being another part of our community, then yes, we wanted to join."

The Patels' food mart is a popular stop for the Chalybeate area, carrying typical convenient store items, a hot deli, gas, tobacco products, and lotto tickets. They also carry highway and off-road diesel, along with kerosene.
Picture
"We believe in this community so we are always trying to find ways to give back," he said.

He also said that they are happy to allow vegetable stands and other similar booths to use their location at no cost, because he believes businesses should work together.

"We have a good spot here and anyone interested in a booth outside should come and talk to us. All our businesses would do better if we can find ways to help each other."

Chamber Director Greg Hudson said the Patels embody the spirit that the Chamber is working hard to promote.

"We're thrilled that Chalybeate Food Mart has been successful, and the Patels are a great representation of how to do business in our community," he said. "They are constantly looking for ways to give back to Edmonson County and we know they will be a great asset in our local Chamber."

The food mart is open 5am to 9pm 7 days a week. You can reach them by calling 270-597-8000. They are located at 1990 Chalybeate Road, Smiths Grove, KY 42171.

A long-cherished summer activity returned this year for Edmonson County Youth. Last week 42 campers, teen leaders, and adult volunteers from Edmonson County traveled to the 450-acre Western Kentucky 4-H Camp in Dawson Springs, Kentucky. 4-H Camp returned with enhanced COVID-19 protocols in place to protect campers and leaders.

Edmonson County Campers traveled to and from activities together as a group during the week, limiting interaction with campers from other counties.  Due to this, campers had the opportunity to participate in all the classes offered by camp instead of just three or four classes. Classes included archery, agriculture, canoeing, crafts, fishing, nature, low ropes, outdoor survival, riflery, and swim. Campers were able to attend at a discounted rate due to generous community donations and Ag. Tag Funds.
