May 20-26, 2018 is the 44th annual EMS Week Edmonson Voice Staff Report:
President Gerald Ford authorized EMS Week on November 4, 1974 to celebrate EMS, its practitioners and the important work they do in responding to medical emergencies. Back then, EMS was a fledgling profession and EMS practitioners were only beginning to be recognized as a critical component of emergency medicine and the public health safety net. A lot has changed over the last four decades. EMS is now firmly established as a key component of the medical care continuum, and the important role of EMS practitioners in saving lives from sudden cardiac arrest and trauma; in getting people to the hospitals best equipped to treat heart attacks and strokes; and in showing caring and compassion to their patients in their most difficult moments. The employees of Edmonson County Ambulance Service work diligently to provide high quality emergency pre-hospital care to the citizens and visitors of Edmonson County. Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians receive continuing education on the latest advances in pre-hospital emergency medicine, enabling them to provide the best possible care for Edmonson County residents. In observance of EMS Week, Judge Executive Wil Cannon has signed the proclamation below, specifically for the Edmonson County EMS. This year’s theme is “EMS Strong: Stronger Together”. Please take a few moments to recognize those individuals who have dedicated their lives to providing life-saving care whenever and wherever it is needed.

Fishing has been good this week for those of us braving the unseasonably hot weather. Spotted bass are biting good on jigs, spinnerbaits and shaky heads. Rock piles, boulders and bluffs are holding good numbers. Green pumpkin, melon/red and purple have been good flavors of plastics. White is reliable for spinnerbaits. Largemouth are in their spawn/post spawn mode. Chatterbaits with a swimbait trailer have been productive. Ten feet is a good depth to fish. Crappie are scattered and can be caught slow trolling jigs over deep brush. Bluegill are biting well near shoreline cover. Rock and shade have been two factors in finding good bluegill. A 1/32 ounce black popeye jig tipped with a meal worm is reliable when fished under a float. White bass are biting on jigs, small crankbaits and spinners. Finding baitfish over the river channel is key to find schools of white bass. Walleye are biting live bait rigs on points and gravel banks. A red Earie Dearie tipped with a crawler is a reliable lure. Fishing around 5 feet in low light periods puts the odds in your favor. Catfish are biting good on cut bait, livers and dough baits. Fishing low light periods along rocky banks has been productive. The lake is clear, near pool and in the low 80's. Wear your PFD and take the kids fishing. We don't want to forget those special ladies in our life! Are you stumped on what you are getting your Mom, Grandmother, Wife? Flowers remain the top gifted item for the Moms in our life on Mother’s Day. Instead of giving the usual cut flower arrangement that will soon wilt and be tossed away, give her a gift that will keep on giving through the spring and summer or even for years to come. One very important thing to keep in mind when gifting flowers is to know is how much sunlight will it get at its new home. A shade loving plant will not be able to survive in an area that gets sun a majority of the day no matter how much TLC you give it. So be sure to check the labels in each plant. See the below recommendations for lighting conditions. Full sun: Prefers six or more hours of direct sunshine a day Partial shade: Thrives in three to six hours of daily sunshine Shade: Generally does well with less than three hours of sun per day, preferably morning sun. If you want to give a gift that keeps on giving year after year, get her a perennial like a Clematis, a Peony, or one of the many other perennials that are available. Rose bushes, other flowering shrubs like Hydrangeas, and ornamental trees are also a great gift idea that she can enjoy for years to come. If you unsure about what flowers she would like or what type of plant would do best at her home, you can always get your avid gardener some new gardening gloves or tools.
Beautiful garden décor is also another gift idea that may just add the perfect touch to her garden or even a hummingbird feeder. If you are still unsure, you can always get a gift certificate and she can choose the plants to her liking. Take a day and make a special outing with her to pick them out, spending time together would be the greatest gift of all. To all the Mothers out there, Happy Mother’s Day from Mammoth Cave Transplants! Stop by Saturday May 12th for Mother's Day Tea & Cookies! Also with purchase, moms will receive 1 token for 1 free dip of Chaney's Ice cream for Moms in a cup or regular cone. Kyrock and South Edmonson Family Fitness Walk A Great Success Edmonson Voice Staff Report: The fourth annual Family Fitness Walk was held on Saturday, April 28th, at Edmonson County High School. Over 75 people registered for the event where Kyrock Elementary and South Edmonson Elementary students and family members could walk/run their choice of number of laps on the ECHS track. Students, who could earn Recess Walking Club points by participating in the event, would proudly ring a bell each time they completed a lap on the track. Students used a pulse meter to track their heart rate. Once participants completed their laps, they visited activity stations (set up by a group of WKU Physical Education majors) that included hula hoops, jump ropes, bean bag toss, ball toss and a pushup station where students could challenge their parent/guardian to a pushup contest. Nutrition related hands-on activities that educated students on healthy food choices accompanied the healthy snack table where bananas, carrots, lightly salted pretzels and bottled water were provided. Check out the slideshow below: In a statement from the event, coordinators said: "We would like to thank the following businesses and persons for their role in making this event a great success: Bowling Green Internal Medicine & Pediatric Associates, Bank of Edmonson County, Patton Funeral Home, Green River Canoeing, Wilson Dental Clinic, Greg Vincent Law Office, The Cee Bee Food Store, Gravil Funeral Home, Edmonson Drug Company, Inc, Carroll Brothers Auto Body, Madison Flowers, Rachel’s Place Hair Salon, Alpha Energy Systems, Edmonson Voice, and Community Champion Ruth Parker."
"We would like to thank Coca Cola/Clark Beverage Group for donating water for the event, ECHS Health and PE Teacher Bart Weaver for providing test tubes showing the fat and sugar content of popular foods, ECMS PE Teacher Brad Meredith for providing us with the pushup counters and a sit and reach box, ECHS Administrators Tommy Hodges, Patricia Sharp, and Kyle Pierce for their assistance in reserving the track, and a special thanks to Darrell Basil for his event day facility assistance." Fishing has been good this week. Nolin is clear, a bit over summer pool and falling. Surface temps are right around 70 degrees. Bass are taking a variety of lures. A white spinnerbait or chatterbait continues to be very good. A slow, steady retrieve works best with the bait being just out of sight. A paddle tail swimbait trailer adds to the presentation. Jigs and chunks are working well off rocky points. Black/blue flavors are good as are green pumpkin. Slowly crawling the jig has been a good retrieve. Crappie, for the most part, seems to have moved off shore into deeper water. Spider rigging with minnows or jigs has been a productive technique with dedicated crappie anglers. Look for crappie to be suspended over deep structure. White bass can still be caught in the river. Try fishing channel bends with a 1/8 ounce grub or white rooster tail spinner. White bass activity appears to be picking up in the main lake. A few elusive walleye have been caught casting crankbaits. Brightly colored lures in chartreuse, pink, purple or red are productive. Weight forward spinners with a crawler or jigs tipped with a minnow are good live bait choices. Mud points near deep water are good walleye locations. Wear your PFD and take Mom fishing this weekend! Dear Editor,
We would like to invite our fellow Edmonson Countians to join us on May 22nd in proudly supporting our local sheriff, Shane Doyle. Shane’s credentials as a dedicated public servant and a true visionary leader have been well-documented by his remarkable track record. Just like so many of your readers, we too are proud when checking the day’s headlines only to find more and more arrests that have been made due to the crackdown on drugs and violent crimes. Since Sheriff Doyle was elected, there has been a 10% increase in drug arrests-- even with a more limited staff. Property crimes have decreased by 37% with a 10% increase in convictions. Violent crimes have decreased by 10% with an 8% increase in convictions. Indisputable facts such as these are just a few reasons we commend Shane and his staff for achieving impressive results in such a short time. As parents that are raising a young family, it is both encouraging and reassuring to know Sheriff Doyle is fighting daily for the betterment of our small town. The opportunity for Shane to continue his commitment to keep our families safe will be a direct result of the support from neighbors like you and us. Let’s come together once again and do our part to re-elect our sheriff, Shane Doyle. Respectfully, Eric & Lesley Spainhoward, Chalybeate There will be a Show & Shine for Christian Goodroe at the Edmonson County Fairgrounds. The Event is on Saturday May 12th from 12pm until 6pm. Throughout the entire state, only ten VFW Posts were selected for All-State. Edwin Vincent, VFW Post 6937 outgoing Commander who is in line to soon become State Commander, responded modestly telling Post comrades, “I’d like to thank everyone in the Post for working to make this happen. Each of you should take pride in this recognition.” Here in Edmonson County, Post 6937 is most visible to the community in conducting burial honors for veterans, conducting flag training, patriotic speaking and writing contests in the schools, as well as providing honors at significant community events, such as the upcoming Memorial Day ceremony in the Courthouse square on Monday May 28, 2018 beginning at 9:30 am. She went to the Edmonson County Library and the Edmonson Learning Academy Preschool and read them a storybook Josh the Baby Otter. She helped with otter arts and crafts so younger kids could learn water safety messages. A total of 34 kids and parents attended the two programs.
Josh the Otter is a water safety campaign represented by a national annual event held in May — National Water Safety Month. It was designed and created to help children comprehend and remember to stay away from water unless accompanied by an adult. The children participating are around three to five years old. They take a pledge as part of the activities; “I promise to be a good son or daughter. I promise to get an adult when I go near the water.” The mission is to educate children and hold events about water safety through drowning prevention campaigns and early childhood water safety training, according to Robertson. "It is a perfect match for the Corps’ similar water safety messages, and it is aimed at younger children and their parents so they can learn together." The group also learned about otters, swimming lesson options in the area, and to always wear a life jacket while boating or near the water at the lake. “It was a fun opportunity to play, have crafts and masks and to teach our future visitors of Nolin Lake how to be safe around the water” said Robertson. Josh the Otter book, coloring books and masks were donated by the Josh Collins Memorial Foundation. The foundation was started after a child, Joshua Collingsworth, passed away due to complications from a drowning accident near Omaha. His family created the Josh the Otter campaign for water safety in his memory.
