Moriah Peterson, story and photos: Friends and families gathered together for Freedom Fest 2017 at the Chalybeate Sports Complex on Friday, June 30th. This event had something for everyone including cornhole, shopping at booths, face painting and live music. This is a free event hosted by the Edmonson County Parks and Recreation department. The playground was a popular place for kids to play while waiting for the fireworks to begin. The boy scouts from troop 597 helped direct traffic as more and more people arrived. Greg Hudson, Parks and Rec administrator said this year’s crowd was larger than normal and they have received good feedback from a successful event. Park concessions, JJ’s Frozen Floating Oasis, and Backyard BBQ and Grill offered delicious meal options and tasty treats. There were plenty of smiling faces during the little league awards as medals and trophies were given. The local band Double Nothin was entertainment for the night and played until dark. The evening came to a close with a stunning firework show set off by the Chalybeate Fire Department. “We would really like to thank all of our sponsors that help put on the fest and all the events we have during the year” said Hudson.
