Edmonson Voice Staff A Brownsville Police officer was alerted by the loud sounds of the rumble strips on HWY 259 as a Honda sedan had trouble staying between the lines while approaching the southern Brownsville city limits late Sunday night/early Monday morning around 1:30am. The officer was checking traffic speeds with a radar gun when he said he clocked the Honda driving 75mph in a 55mph zone. The officer reported that he conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and found the driver, Richard Henley, 35 of Glasgow very distracted and having trouble answering questions. Edmonson Voice Staff The Edmonson County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of an extremely distraught female near the Kyrock substation, just south of Kyrock Fire Department on Friday, May 6, 2016 around 7pm. The caller said the female was walking along HWY 259 and looked to be injured. Deputies said when they arrived, they saw Natasha Meredith, 35 very upset with a bloody foot. Officials reported that Meredith told them her husband had thrown her from their vehicle and left her on the side of the road, and that she had sustained an injury in the incident. Deputies said they could tell the woman had been drinking. The deputies said they went to the couple's residence at Oak View mobile home park in Brownsville and after interviewing the husband and other witnesses, it was determined that the woman had made the story up. Witnesses also reported that the woman had been drinking most of the day and that she sustained her injuries because she was intoxicated. She was arrested and charged with Falsely reporting an accident-1st and 2nd offenses, and Public intoxication. She was lodged in the Hart County Jail. Meredith pleaded not guilty to both charges in district court this week. Judge Executive Wil Cannon signed a proclamation at the May 9, 2016 Fiscal Court meeting declaring May 15 thru 21st "EMS Week" in Edmonson County, recognizing the national event at a local level. The theme for this year's event is entitled "EMS STRONG, Called to Care." A printed statement on the proclamation from Cannon said "I encourage the community to show their appreciation to Emergency Medical Service providers." In 1973, President Gerald Ford authorized EMS Week to celebrate EMS, its practitioners and the important work they do in responding to medical emergencies. Back then, EMS was a fledgling profession and EMS practitioners were only beginning to be recognized as a critical component of emergency medicine and the public health safety net.
A lot has changed over the last four decades. EMS is now firmly established as a key component of the medical care continuum, and the important role of EMS practitioners in saving lives from sudden cardiac arrest and trauma; in getting people to the hospitals best equipped to treat heart attacks and strokes; and in showing caring and compassion to their patients in their most difficult moments. Whether it’s the team at Grady EMS in Atlanta who had the expertise to transport the nation's first Ebola patient, the volunteer firefighters and flight medics called to search for and rescue survivors in the Everett, Wash. mudslide or the thousands of EMS responses that happen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and don't make the news, EMS is there for their communities at their greatest time of need. Please join the Edmonson Voice and all of Edmonson County to take a few moments to recognize those individuals who have dedicated their lives to providing life-saving care whenever and wherever it is needed. Darren Doyle, story and photos Three vehicles were involved in an accident on Chalybeate Road today just in front of the Chalybeate Food Mart around 2:45pm. A fourth car was in the mix, but somehow escaped damage. Officials said that Dawnita Cook, 33 was stopped in a 2010 Toyota Camry in the southbound lane waiting for the car in front of her to turn into the store parking lot. Behind Cook was a Dodge Challenger, also stopped. Officials said Destiny Smith, a Grayson County resident in a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer, was distracted and didn't see the stopped cars until she upon them. Deputies said she swerved onto the right shoulder of the road, lost control of the vehicle and it spun around, somehow avoiding the Challenger, but striking Mrs. Cook in her Camry. Officials said Madelyne Taylor, an 18 year old ECHS senior from Chalybeate, was following the Trailblazer in a 2001 GMC Sierra. Due to the Trailblazer not immediately applying the brakes, Ms. Taylor was unaware that traffic was stopped until she was virtually on top of the wrecked cars. She was able to avoid a collision by swerving right and taking the ditch in front of Mr. Henry Rea's house, turning a full 180 degrees. Ms. Taylor was recently in a single vehicle accident about a month ago and said that she was actually on her way to pick up her repaired car which was damaged in the prior accident. School buses and other school related traffic were backed up all along Chalybeate stretch as emergency personnel cleared the scene.
No injuries were reported. Responding to the scene was the Edmonson County Sheriff's Office, Chalybeate Fire Department, Brownsville Fire Department, and Edmonson EMS. At the May School Board meeting, Nadina Alexander, a 5th grade teacher, was awarded for her participation in the Aspiring Principals Training at Harvard University. Mrs. Alexander is participating in the Leading to Learn Grant, a federal grant coordinated by GRREC (Green River Regional Educational Cooperative) that encourages educators to pursue a principalship certificate by helping with tuition and providing professional learning experiences necessary to become effective administrators. Kyle Cassady, Leading to Learn Coordinator at GRREC, was on hand to present the award as well as Joe Tinius, former Bowling Green Independent Schools Superintendent and Mrs. Alexander's Leading to Learn Mentor. Mr. Tinius said, "Mrs. Alexander is committed and dedicated to the program." He said that he believes her strong relationships with her students will help her reach her full potential as a future principal. Darren Doyle, story

Edmonson Voice Staff Each year, the Edmonson County Fiscal Court and Scott Waste Management host a "County Wide Clean Up" event, where dumpsters are provided at no charge at each community fire department. Mike Clubb, Kyrock Fire Chief and event coordinator, said this year's event was another success, even though there were a couple of incidents of people not following the rules by either throwing their trash on the ground or dumping past the deadline. "We're always going to have a few issues with some who don't follow the rules, but nothing that can't be handled," Clubb said. "We usually get a few gripes, but you just can't please everybody." He said 43 dumpsters were filled county-wide and that 79 tons of trash and junk were hauled out. "I think it's a good thing for the county and hopefully the event will continue to keep it a little cleaner." EC Chamber and Tourism Director Rhonda Clemmons reported on the recent positive feedback received from "ChamberTalk" on D93's Tony Rose Morning Show with the Edmonson Voice. The monthly radio segment on the popular radio program featured Bank of Edmonson County and WRECC last week. She said the Chamber was very pleased with the coverage provided by WDNS and the Edmonson Voice. She also discussed the EC Tourism's First Annual Photo Contest in partnership with the Edmonson Voice that launched today. Edmonson Voice readers can submit their photos promoting Edmonson County for upcoming promotional materials with a chance to win prize money. Readers will also choose a first, second, and third place winners. The Edmonson Voice had already received a dozen entries before this morning's meeting. The court took a short break then opened preliminary discussions for the proposed county budget for the next fiscal year. The next Fiscal Court meeting is scheduled to be held on Monday, May 23, 2016. Edmonson Voice Staff
At today's May 9, 2016 Fiscal Court meeting, Judge Executive Wil Cannon presented the first copy of the proposed 2016-17 fiscal year county budget, currently estimated at $4.6 million dollars. It was only a preliminary discussion that will likely lead up to an eventual agreed budget within the next few weeks. Court officials said as of now, it doesn't appear that there is any major change since last year's budget, other than an approximate $300,000 increase for the new proposed Lincoln Fire Sub Station, but a $279K grant recently awarded to the county will offset the increase. The county's fiscal year runs from July through June. The total preliminary budget is a $59,000 increase from last year's figures, mostly coming from cost of living increases and county jail and prisoner transport costs associated with prisoner medical expenses. A final budget will be voted on within the next few weeks. County Attorney J.B. Hines reported that Edmonson County has moved up again in child support collection ranking to 38 statewide. Hines said that the county was ranked at 91 out of 120 in January of 2016, for a 53 spot improvement since that time. He also reported that his office has hired a new assistant county attorney, Mr. Richard Jackson, and that Jackson has already been an asset to the office. Jackson is originally from Monroe County. Hines said the new assistant has experience in bankruptcy, organization, and open record meeting laws. He said the new assistant would also work on collecting delinquent property taxes. Edmonson Voice Staff Emergency personnel were called out to the 1300 block of Chalybeate Road on Saturday at a two car collision where a Nissan Altima crossed paths with a Toyota pickup around 4:30PM. Officials said Myron Oneal Rice 36, of Lindseyville was headed south on 101 when he stopped to turn left into a residential driveway. It was reported that he didn't see the oncoming truck, a tan Toyota Tacoma, driven by McNeil Vanmeter, 74, Bee Spring, that was headed north. The pickup struck the car in the rear passenger quarter panel of the Altima. The Altima was also carrying a passenger, Erica Meredith, 31, also of Lindseyville, as well as her two daughters, both juveniles. Although both vehicles sustained considerable damage, there were no injuries reported other than minor cuts and bruises. Both parties refused medical treatment.
Officials said the use of seat belts and air bags greatly reduced the risk of injury. Responding to the scene was the Edmonson County Sheriff's Office, Edmonson EMS, and both Chalybeate and Brownsville Fire Departments. story and photos by Penny Saltsman Recently, Genesis Healthcare hosted a special event at the direction of the Disabled American Veterans and Auxiliary, assisted by Boy Scout Troop 597. Several months ago, storm winds ripped the American and Kentucky flag from the existing flagpole at the healthcare center, taking the rope with it. Jenny Oakes, Activities Director, said the American flag was eventually found in the trees by the creek, but the Kentucky flag was never found. The issue of missing flags was brought to the attention of the DAV Auxiliary by one of its members, Madge Lashley, a resident of the healthcare center whose room faced the empty flagpole. Immediately after hearing the story of the lost flags, plans were made to remedy the flag-less pole. Auxiliary Commander, Maurita Miller, worked closely with Chris Swihart, the healthcare’s Administrator, and Jenny Oakes in preparation of a flag dedication ceremony. At the ceremony, held on April 9, 2016, members of Boy Scout Pack 597 delivered a Kentucky and an American flag to Mrs. Oakes on behalf of the Wand B Doyle Chapter 32 Disabled American Veterans and Auxiliary, to fly perpetually as the emblem of the cause for which our country and citizens of the State of Kentucky has fought and continues to fight, and for our many freedoms. Mrs. Oakes then asked the Boy Scouts to assist in posting the Colors and Kentucky flag to their empty flagpole. After the dedication and posting of Colors, participants and residents at the facility enjoyed refreshments celebrating the occasion. After the dedication, members of Boy Scout Pack 597 visited residents who had served our military and presented them with small American flags thanking them for their service.
The DAV and Auxiliary said that it was a honor to participate in the event and gave praise and thanks to Mrs. Oakes and Mr. Swihart, to Boy Scout Pack #597, to Rep. Michael Meredith for contributing the Kentucky flag, and to all of our veterans for their many sacrifices so that we may have the freedoms we enjoy today. From taking care of bumps and bruises to making sure we finished our homework and millions of things in between, you've been there for us, Mom! From everyone at the Edmonson Voice, Happy Mother's Day to all you special Moms out there. We hope you have a great day.
Darren Doyle, story and photos Emergency personnel were dispatched to a cornfield today around 2:00pm on HWY 259 just near the Rocky Hill crossroads where a vehicle left the roadway, rolled multiple times, and finally came to rest 260 feet away in a cornfield. The Sheriff's Office reported that Rashdeen Furkhandeen, 40, of Brownsville was driving a 2002 Honda Civic on HWY 259 at a high rate of speed when the driver said he lost control of the car as he topped a hill. Officials said the car crossed the oncoming lane, went off the left side of the roadway and began to flip. Sheriff Shane Doyle said there were seven different impact marks along the 260 foot stretch of cornfield, littered with glass and car parts, where the car rolled multiple times. Unbelievably, the driver, nor his passenger, Mohamed Azaam Mohamed Fazli, 24, Brownsville, were seriously injured. The passenger, who was wearing his seatbelt during the crash, walked away from the upside down car with a minor injury to his right arm. The driver suffered non-life threatening injuries to his right arm, face, and upper back. He was transported to the Medical Center by Edmonson EMS. It was unknown if the driver was wearing a seatbelt.
"To look at the car, how far it traveled, and to see the path it took, it's hard to believe anyone could survive a crash like this," Sheriff Doyle said. "These men are very fortunate to only have suffered what appears to be minor injuries." In addition to the Sheriff's office and EMS, the Rocky Hill and Kyrock Fire Departments also responded. It's that time again, and the class of 2016 will soon be tossing those caps in the air, bidding farewell to ECHS, and saying hello to the new world that awaits. Make sure you let this year's graduating class or that one special student know that you you wish them well on their journey forward.

Darren Doyle, story and photos The clanking of academic medallions echoed in the gym at South Edmonson Elementary today as over 270 fourth and fifth graders were honored for their Proficient and Distinguished scores on last year's K-PREP testing, helping to make SEES a Proficient level school, which is the state's second highest honor. Parents, friends, and relatives joined school staff and faculty in the ceremony today as Principal Jamie Woosley addressed the crowd with a few words of introduction. "We do this so we can look each of these students in the eye, shake their hands, give them an award and say Congratulations, you were able to put forth the leadership skills you've learned, and it's paid off," he said. The test scores are huge factors in how Edmonson County Schools operate. The better the test scores, the better the funding schools receive. While Mr. Woosley understands the importance of the scores, he also said SEES focuses on other factors. "We're developing and raising good people, and that's what this whole thing is about," he told the crowd. "We want to develop the best student possible, both academically and socially." Medallions and certificates were given out to students scoring either Proficient or Distinguished in one or more categories: reading, math, and language mechanics. Personalized engraved plaques where awarded to students in scored Distinguished in all subjects.
Students were all smiles as they accepted their awards, but the highlight for many came afterwards when they all enjoyed cookies and punch as they had photos made with family and friends. Darren Doyle, story and photos A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...Well, it was actually around 10am this morning and only in Brownsville, but today, students at the EC 5/6 Center received visits from some very famous Star Wars characters as they watched their "May The Scores Be With You" pre-testing motivational production. Complete with an impressive (most impressive) set that included props, authentic costumes, music soundtracks, laser lights and fog machines, the crew welcomed local celebrity Tony Rose from Bowling Green's Classic Rock D93 as he and the characters played Star Wars themed games while talking about the importance of the upcoming K-Prep Testing. "It can be pretty hard to get kids fired up over testing," Rose joked. "But EC schools, Community Ed, and the Family Resouce/Youth Service Center raise the bar each year to have something fun, and this year, I got to be a Jedi, so how cool is that?" Rose and the galactic crew spoke to the kids about getting plenty of rest, eating a healthy breakfast, and staying focused so they could do their best on the upcoming tests. Jamie Carnes, State and Federal Programs Supervisor, said Rose has always been part of pre-testing programs for Edmonson County Schools. Mr. Carnes, who is a huge Star Wars fan, played a huge part in the set up and audio of the performance, which the kids thoroughly enjoyed, along with the faculty and staff.
Rose was able to help defeat the evil Empire today as he led kids in all sorts of relay races, hula hoop stunts, and more. "We don't just talk about kids and communities," Rose added. "We're a part of it. I get to do some amazing things with my job and Edmonson County kids help make that happen." The production is set to come to other Edmonson Schools tomorrow, Friday May 6. Edmonson Voice Staff Recently, the Student Lighthouse and Leadership teams at South Edmonson Elementary were required to complete a service learning project this school year so they decided to help children at a children's hospital. According to Curriculum Coordinator Emily Cassady, regulations wouldn't allow the students to physically go to a hospital. They weren't ready to give up on the idea, so they continued trying to find ways to help this type of cause. "We brainstormed and found out we could assemble Chemo Care Kits for Kids," she said. "This is where we put together kits for kids going through chemotherapy. We collected items for side effects, comfort, and activities. All of these items were put in bags and boxed up to ship off." The students put the kits together which are now ready to be shipped to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Mrs. Cassady and Counselor Penny Tuttle organized the event. Cassady said the Lighthouse Team is part of the "Leader in Me" initiative. The group is made up of twelve students who applied (or were nominated by their teacher for K-2) at the beginning of the year. These students meet after school with the Faculty Lighthouse team to make school-wide decisions.
She said they do several things throughout the year that range from painting motivational quotes on the wall to deciding on honor roll rewards for the school. The Leadership Team are students who are identified as leadership students through the school's gifted and talented program. Darren Doyle, story and photos Local firefighters were called to a structure fire at 7400 Wingfield Church Road in Wingfield today, where they found one side of the home of Shirley Cardwell fully engulfed when they arrived. Brad Sullivan, owner of Sullivan's Tree Service and next door neighbor said he and an employee who lived at the home, Steven Cardwell had returned home from work early because of rain and saw smoke coming from the garage. Both men said they called 911 then grabbed a garden hose and began trying to contain the fire which was only in the garage at the time. "We just barely missed it," Sullivan said. "We almost had it out when it shot back up into the ceiling. At that point, there was nothing we could do." Steven Cardwell said he also realized his father was home at the time, on the other end of the house. He said the man was unaware that the home was on fire. "I ran in and told them, Get out, get out now!" he said. Cardwell said he was able to save the family pets (dogs and cats) except for one cat that wasn't located. They assumed it was lost in the fire. Firefighters worked through the rain to contain the blaze but what wasn't ruined by the flames was destroyed with smoke and water damage. The cause of the fire was unknown, but began in the garage. One man said it was possible it stemmed from a lawnmower inside. Other speculators mentioned lightning strikes as another possibility.
Fire departments on scene were Wingfield, Chalybeate, Brownsville, and Richardsville. There were no injuries reported. |
