8U Girls All-Stars Fall Short In Tourney

8/25/2014

Edmonson Voice Staff
The Edmonson County All-Star Red Hots traveled to Campbellsville on Saturday, August 23, to compete in an eight-team invitational tournament. With temps in the mid 90's, and the heat index hovering around 100 all day, the Red Hots certainly lived up to their name. They had their hands full right out of the gate, playing the tourney favorite, the Taylor Co. Kaos (pronounced 'chaos'). EC's defense, which grabbed the attention of everyone in the tournament, kept them in the game, but eventually lost by only two runs.
The second game, against the Traveling Cardinals, proved to be one that the Red Hots wanted to soon forget. The heat of the day and blistering sun seemed to drain EC, and their bats were anything but 'red-hot.' The game was called after the fourth inning and EC lost by six.

The last game was certainly the highlight of the tournament. With the solid offense of Taylor Co vs. the gold glove defense of EC, fans were in for a treat. Led by veterans Whitney Davis (P), Kerri Ann Johnson (SS), Alyssa Doyle (2B), and Callie Webb (1B), the Red Hots put on a clinic in the field. Davis caught a blistering line drive to end the 2nd inning. She was asked if her hand was stinging as she left the field, she replied, "Yeah, but she's out..." Callie Webb made play after play at first, and Alyssa Doyle dazzled with scooping up a grounder, sweep-tagging a runner, and firing to first to complete a double play. Kerri Ann Johnson took a hard grounder to the chin on one play, but somehow was still able to make the catch. The Red Hots battled, but lost a hard-fought game.
