Both the Lady Cats and Wildcats fell to Thomas Nelson tonight on the final night of the 2019 Caveland Classic, sponsored by Rafferty's/Double Dogs. The Lady Cats got behind early to the hot-shooting Generals and found themselves behind double-digits in the first quarter. TN led 20-13 after the first. Coach Bart Weaver called off the man-to-man defense and dropped back into a zone, which was much more efficient for Edmonson County. The Lady Cats had cut it to 31-27 at the half. Paced by point guard's Katie Lindsey 20 points, who had been quiet on the offense side of things over the past couple games, the Lady Cats fought back with a few runs, but a 9-2 run by the Generals capped off the third and Edmonson County wasn't able to catch back up as they fell 54-58. In addition to Lindsey's 20 points, she also had 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. She also hit all 7 of her free throws. Lauren Ballance added another double-double to this year's stats with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Emma Rose Vincent added 8 points, Madison Harrison had 6, Macie McCombs had 5, and Paige Wolfe had 2. Wildcats 66, Thomas Nelson 71 The Wildcats lost their fourth in a row tonight as they fell to the Thomas Nelson Generals. While a team effort was shown by Edmonson County with four players in double figures, poor free throw shooting (59%) came back to haunt them along with missed opportunities down the stretch. Dalton Decker led in scoring with 17 points and impressed throughout the classic, averaging 29ppg through the three Caveland Classic games. Edmonson County was solid early and led 22-20 after the first quarter, but a better second quarter from the Generals gave them a 43-36 halftime lead. Thomas Nelson committed only 5 turnovers and shot 77% from the free throw line, which included 7 in a row as the final quarter began to close. Eli Booker had 13 points and 4 rebounds, Mason Pierce scored 12, Chaz Wilson had 11 points and 7 rebounds, Mick Clemmons had 5, and Isaiah Johnson scored 2. Edmonson County is now 2-6 on the season. Edmonson County native Scott Lindsey, senior VP of Rafferty's, presented a check to ECHS Athletics to cover tournament costs. Rafferty's provided food for all players and team staff on Friday night. On Saturday, Lindsey presented a signed bench to Coleton Parsley, which had several former professional and college players from the University of Kentucky and the Cincinnati Reds. It's the 13th year in a row Rafferty's/Double Dogs had sponsored the Caveland Classic. The Kentucky Historical Society also brought a mobile exhibit called the History Mobile, from the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame, which was available on Saturday at no cost.

Cats Fall To Green County 74-73 Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: Dalton Decker poured in 32 points for Edmonson County tonight against Green County in a 74-73 loss at ECHS tonight in the Raffery's Double Dogs Caveland Classic. It was the second night in a row that Decker scored more than 30 points after his 39-point effort last night in a double overtime loss against Metcalfe County. Green County found early success with their size advantage as they crashed the boards and overpowered in the paint with a 16-8 lead after the first quarter. In addition to their post play, the Dragons also hit 7 three-pointers on the night, including 6 from senior forward Braden Sluder. The Dragons took a 30-17 lead into the locker room at the half. Edmonson County got a basket closer in the third quarter but a big run in the fourth got the Cats within 2 on two different occasions. When Edmonson needed a rebound or a bucket, it seemed like it went the other way. Decker hit a three-pointer at the buzzer, but it was still a point shy as Edmonson County lost their third in a row, falling to 2-5 on the year.
In addition to Decker, Mason Pierce had 11, Gavin Rose had 11 off the bench, Trent Taylor added 7, Isaiah Johnson had 6, and Nick Clemmons and Chaz Wilson each had three. Edmonson County will take on Thomas Nelson on Saturday night at the final night of the classic following the Lady Cats who are scheduled to tip off at 5:30pm. Edmonson Wins 2nd In A Row With 49-40 Over Green County Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: Lauren Ballance had her second 20-point-plus game in a row tonight with a 23-point performance over the Green County Lady Dragons in the second night of the Raffery's/Double Dogs Caveland Classic at ECHS. Coming off a 25-point, 10 rebound night against Metcalfe County where the Lady Cats won easily and possibly set a school record for the most team rebounds in a game (49), Ballance led the way for Edmonson County in a scrappy and sometimes sloppy game. Edmonson County led throughout the game but Green County refused to go quietly with a full court press that gave the Lady Cats trouble throughout the night. Green County had cut their deficit to only 2 with just under 5 minutes to go, but Ballance hit a 15-foot jumper in the corner to extend the Lady Cat lead to 37-33 with 4:25 left. Macie McCombs buried a three on their next possession and Ballance was able to hit 7 out of 8 free throws in the final minute and half (including two more from McCombs) that iced the game for Edmonson County. In addition to Ballance, McCombs added 11, Emma Rose Vincent had 10 points and 8 rebounds, Madison Harrison had 3 points and 10 rebounds, Katie Lindsey had 2 points and Lily Jane Vincent added 7 rebounds.
Edmonson County is now 4-3 on the season and will face Thomas Nelson in the final night of the Raffery's/Double Dogs Caveland Classic on Saturday night at 5:30. Edmonson Voice Sports:
Senior Lauren Ballance scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds last night as the Lady Cats dominated Metcalfe County in the Rafferty's/Double Dogs Caveland Classic, but it was also a family affair as sister combo senior Emma Rose Vincent and freshman Lily Jayne Vincent both put up two double-doubles of their own in the 69-35 win. Emma Rose scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds while her younger sister Lily Jayne scored 10 and grabbed 10 boards. Edmonson County shot 26-55 from the floor for 47% shooting on the night on 6-18 from three point range (33%). The Lady Cats squeegeed the boards with a whopping 49 rebounds as a team. Also scoring was Macie McCombs with 8 points, Shea VanMeter had 5, Jadlyn Simon had 3, Katie Lindsey had 2, and Hallie Cassady had 2. The Lady Cats will take on Green County tonight at 5:30 at ECHS in the second night of the Caveland Classic. The boys will take the floor in a double header at 7:15. Edmonson Voice Sports:
Edmonson County senior guard Dalton Decker's 39-point, double-double career high wasn't enough to put the Wildcats in the win column as they fell 93-86 to Metcalfe County in double overtime in their opener at the 2019 Rafferty's/Double Dogs Caveland Classic. Decker also grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out 5 assists in the back-and-forth marathon. Edmonson County also had two more in double figures as Mason Pierce put up 16 points and 6 rebounds and Nick Clemmons added 12 points. Junior Chaz Wilson barely missed being the fourth double figure player with 9 points. "We played catch up all game long," said Coach Mike McClintic. "Dalton had a heckuva game. We started out slow and had to catch up and it seems like we did that the whole game. Metcalfe County is a good team and they play a lot like us. They all work hard and know their roles." The Wildcats were down a starter as junior forward Daniel Woosley was out due to illness. He is also expected to be out tonight again vs. Green County. The Wildcats shot only 55% from the free throw line (11-20) compared to Metcalfe's 18-20 (90%). "That's the difference in the game right there," said Coach Mac. "But my guys didn't quit and everybody that got in the game contributed. Hopefully we can get some things done tonight against Green County." Edmonson County's girls and boys will both take on Green County in day two of the Caveland Classic beginning at 5:30 for the girls game. The boys will follow at 7:15. The Bowling Green Hot Rods will host a free Cookies with Roscoe Claus and Turbo, the Hot Rods new bat dog, Wednesday, December 18th from 4:30PM-6PM in the Reinhart Stadium Club. Come enjoy cookies, hot chocolate and get your picture taken with both Roscoe Claus and Turbo! The Hot Rods will also be collecting toys for the Toys For Tots program during this time. Admission to this event is FREE. Season ticket holders will also receive a free gift.
Raffery's/Double Dogs Helps Host Another Caveland Classic Darren Doyle, story: The 2019 Caveland Classic is set for Thursday, December 19th through Saturday, December 21st at Edmonson County High School, thanks to Rafferty's/Double Dogs, who is the title sponsor for the annual event. Rafferty's Senior Vice President Scott Lindsey, an Edmonson County native, said this year, the Kentucky Historical Society will be bringing its KHS History Mobile, which is a mobile museum-tractor trailer highlighting the history of Kentucky high school basketball. "The history mobile is in year two of a three-year run featuring 100 years of high school basketball in the state of Kentucky," said Greg Purpus, Chief Operating Officer of the Kentucky High School Basketball HOF. "The state of Kentucky and high school basketball have always been intertwined and can’t really be separated. The mobile unit just seemed like a natural to celebrate 100 years of high school basketball during the Centennial Celebration of 2018." Lindsey said the HistoryMobile will be present at the Rafferty’s/Double Caveland Classic from approximately noon until 6pm on Saturday the 21st at ECHS, most likely in front of the gym. "It’s is essentially an 18-wheeler and is very impressive," Lindsey said. "This will be at no cost and open to everyone." Games will be held at both Edmonson County Middle School and ECHS, with both the Lady Cats and Wildcats playing all their games at ECHS. Girls will tip at 5:30pm nightly with the boys following at approximately 7:15pm. Edmonson County will take on (both girls and boys) Metcalfe County on Thursday, Green County on Friday, and Thomas Nelson on Saturday.
It's the 13th year in a row that Rafferty's/Double Dogs has been the title sponsor. Lindsey said the idea to revive the Caveland Classic came to him and former ECHS coach and Athletic Director Rick Wood, several years ago. They discussed how they wanted to provide a way to keep Edmonson County teams at home during the holiday tournament season while also doing something to help the school, team, and community. "We feel strongly about our sponsorship of the Caveland Classic so we can give back-- because Edmonson County definitely gives to us," Lindsey said. "I count and hear of many EC patrons almost everyday in all of our locations and concepts. Compared to national chains, we are a small company and we like to stay “hometown” so working with charities, schools, and other causes is a way for us to give back. I'm also very proud of my hometown. We can help people and four- legged friends by trying to make our impact on communities more local." Tournament attendees are encouraged to come out for as many games as possible and to stop by the History Mobile exhibit, which is scheduled to be outside the ECHS gym on Saturday. Trojans Win Handily Over Wildcats 81-51 The Wildcats had their hands full on Monday night against a very quick, athletic, and solid shooting Barren County team in a lopsided 81-51 loss. Barren County had already forced two turnovers and a 6-0 lead against the Wildcats in the first 39 seconds of the game. Unfortunately for Edmonson County, they never recovered and 22-7 first quarter deficit for the Cats proved to be too much to overcome. Dalton Decker was the only real source of offense for Edmonson County with 17 points, followed by Mason Pierce's 8.
Also contributing for the Wildcats was Nick Clemmons with 5, Jon Smith with 5, Daniel Woosley with 4, Trent Taylor and Isaiah Johnson with 3 each, and Gavin Rose and Luke Meredith had 2 apiece. Edmonson County is now 2-4 on the season and is scheduled to take on Metcalfe County in the first round of the Caveland Classic this Thursday at 7:15 at ECHS. The tournament will be held December 19-21 at home, thanks to Raffery's/Double Dogs. Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: Three solid individual performances by Lady Cats weren't enough to overcome the sharp shooting Barren County Trojanettes Monday night at ECHS as Edmonson County fell 71-52. Paced by Emma Rose Vincent's 19 points and 9 rebounds, the Lady Cats battled the boards with the help of Madison Harrison's 10 rebounds (6pts), and fought to keep pace with Lauren Ballance's 16 points, but Barren County's senior guard Elizabeth Bertram's 7 three-point night was too much for the Lady Cats to answer. Barren County jumped out to a 18-11 lead after the first and the Lady Cats had cut their deficit to 5 at the half; however, Barren County controlled the tempo of the game in the second half and took the win. When the Lady Cats needed plays, turnovers seemed to be the result, many of which were unforced.
Also scoring for the Lady Cats were Katie Lindsey with 8, Maham Shahbaz with 3, and Macie McCombs with 2. Edmonson County is now 2-3 on the season and will now prepare for the Raffery's/Double Dogs Caveland Classic, scheduled for December 19-21 at ECHS. They are scheduled to take on Metcalfe County Thursday night at 5:30pm. Lady Cougars Top Lady Cats 66-56, Wildcats Fall 50-48 Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: It was a rough night for Edmonson County basketball as both the boys and girls teams dropped each of their games in a District 12 doubleheader on the road in Leitchfield. The Lady Cats got things started of right as they jumped out to an 18-10 lead when point guard Katie Lindsey buried a three as time expired in the first quarter; however, their dominance soon began to falter as Grayson County's Kenzie Renfrow began to have more and more success driving to the basket. Lindsey led the way for the Lady Cats and Madison Harrison notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Grayson County went on a 23-7 run in the second, where they took a 33-25 lead at the half and they never trailed again. Box score for the Lady Cats: Lauren Ballance 15 points, 7 rebounds--Macie McCombs 5 points, 3 rebounds--Emma Rose Vincent 2 points, 6 rebounds. Edmonson shot 34% from the field and only 55% from the free throw line. The Lady Cats are now 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in district play. The boys' match was a game of back-and-forth, where the Wildcats led 39-37 after three quarters, but dribble drives and three-point shooting proved to be the strengths of Grayson County in a game that went down to the final buzzer.
Edmonson County didn't really have a good answer for Nolan Shartzer (24 points) and Keegan Sharp (21 points) who always seemed to get a basket that broke momentum for the Cats. Sharp scored all of his 21 on three pointers. With time winding down in the final quarter and Edmonson trailing 45-48, junior Gavin Rose buried a three to tie the score with 24 seconds to go. Grayson County called timeout to set up a final play wit 14.2 seconds remaining. Sharzter was able to drive the lane, stop and pivot, then make a turnaround jumper at the buzzer for a Cougar win. It was also the return of Chaz Wilson, who averaged a double-double last season. The game was his first back in a Wildcat jersey after suffering a severe ankle injury over the summer which resulted in surgery. Wilson had 2 points and 4 rebounds. Nick Clemmons led in scoring for Edmonson County with 12 points, all on threes. The remaining box score was: Dalton Decker 7pts, 4 rebs--Mason Pierce 9pts, 4 rebs--Eli Booker 6pts, 4 rebs--Gavin Rose 5pts, Daniel Woosley 3pts, 4 rebs--Trent Taylor 2pts, 1 reb. Edmonson County is now 1-4 on the season. ECHS Principal Brian Alexander has announced that the girl/boy basketball games scheduled for tonight, December 10, 2019 have been postponed until January 10th due to the potential for hazardous road conditions.
The next regularly scheduled games are this Friday, December 13th at Grayson County, for a girl/boy doubleheader scheduled for 6pm. Edmonson County Falls To Butler County 73-64 Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: The Bears got off to a solid start in Butler County against the Wildcats on Friday night, pounding the paint and clearing the boards as they took an early 19-13 lead. Edmonson County responded well in the second as they answered with better rebounding of their own and better shot selection. They outscored the Bears by 12 in the quarter and had topped the rebounding column 16-14 going into halftime with a 35-32 lead. However, Butler County responded in a big way in the third quarter, turning the tables with a big 15-2 run that was too much for Edmonson County to overcome. The Wildcats had a better showing in the final quarter but it wasn't enough as Butler County took the first district win of the season with a 73-64 win over Edmonson. "We had a three or four-minute stretch there in the fourth quarter where we got in too big of a hurry were we didn't run some of our stuff and took some quick shots. We didn't really want to do that," said Head Coach Mike McClintic. "But we hung around, and I was proud of them. We battled. We knew they would make runs at us and for the most part, we weathered the storm, but we got in too big of a hurry there."
Edmonson County was led by Dalton Decker's 15 points and 6 rebounds. Mason Pierce added 14 points and 3 rebounds. Gavin Rose came up with 12 points off the bench for the second consecutive game. Nick Clemmons added 9 points on three, 3-pointers, Eli Booker added 6 points, Daniel Woosley added 4, and Trent Taylor added 2. Edmonson County is now 0-2 on the season and will travel to Cumberland County today for a girl-boy doubleheader at 3pm. Their game will follow the girls game, which is scheduled first. Edmonson Grabs District Win Despite Blown No-Call At End Of Regulation Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: It was just what you'd expect from a district game on the road: back-and-forth, ups and downs, and a blown no-call to force overtime. Well, everything except the blown call part. Edmonson County dominated in overtime and claimed the win, 56-47. Tied at 43 each with 7.8 seconds remaining, Butler County made an in-bounds pass that was back-tipped by the Lady Cats. Edmonson's Lauren Ballance grabbed the loose ball with about 5 seconds to go near the half-court line and barreled toward the basket with the game winner on her mind. She went up for a right handed layup, was hit hard by two Butler County defenders, the ball went out of bounds, and three officials stood with their hands in their pockets and their whistles silenced. No call. Coach Bart Weaver was furious. He motioned his hands up and down, "Are you serious? Are you serious?" he yelled at the officials. All three referees shrugged their shoulders at him. In the post game interview with Weaver, Coach said at the end of the game with the lead safely in the Lady Cats' favor, one of the officials admitted that they got it wrong. "You know, you always hate to end a game on something like that, but when you get hammered like that, you have to call it, you just have to call that," he said. "One of the officials said he didn't see it. One of the greatest things I love about referees, one of them comes over and tells me right towards the end of the game, when we've got it won--'coach, I agree with you on that last call,' and I'm like, 'whatever, man'" he said laughing. Luckily for Ballance and the Lady Cats, it wasn't the end. In fact, it was just the beginning. After trailing for nearly the entire game, Edmonson County finally executed Weaver's original game plan that consisted of: winning the rebounding battle, stay under 12 turnovers, and finishing plays when the opportunities came. Edmonson crushed the rebounds, led by senior Emma Rose Vincent's 10 points and 12 rebound performance. Their turnovers hit 12 on the dot, despite 9 of them coming in the first half. And after Ballance tied the score at 43 with two free throws with about a minute to go in regulation, the Lady Cats took the lead in the overtime period as they outscored Butler 13-4 for the finish. In addition to Ballance's 15 point, 8 rebound performance and Vincent's double-double, Katie Lindsey added 11 points, which included a 9 out of 10 showing from the free throw line, several down the stretch. Macie McCombs also added 11 points, Madison Harrison added 4 points and 7 rebounds, and Mia Goad had a three-pointer and 5 rebounds.
Edmonson County is now 1-1 on the season and will travel to Cumberland County for a girl-boy doubleheader today beginning at 3pm. Both teams will have two district road games next week: Trinity on Tuesday and Grayson County on Friday. Tigers Top Cats 78-55 Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: The size of Breckinridge County caused problems for the Wildcats last night in the season opener at ECHS as Edmonson County fell to the Tigers 78-55. Breckinridge County was able to cash in on layups and easy shots in the paint as the Wildcats shot 38% from the field. Edmonson attempted more three pointers than two point field goals in the game, connecting on 9 of 24 of them. The Tigers started with a 17-10 lead and kept that pace throughout the remainder of the contest. Edmonson trailed 38-25 at the break and never seemed to have an answer for the strong inside play of the Tigers. Senior starters Dalton Decker and Mason Pierce sat out during the second quarter with early foul trouble which complicated things a bit more for Edmonson County. Decker led the Wildcats in scoring with 15 points on three 3-pointers and hitting all 6 of his free throws. Junior Gavin Rose put up 12 points off the bench. Senior Nick Clemmons connected on 3 three-pointers for 9, senior Eli Booker finished with 8, Pierce added 5 points and 5 rebounds, Trent Taylor added 3, Luke Meredith had 2, and Daniel Woosley added 1 point. "Once they got going, we didn't have any answers for them for a little while," said Head Coach Mike McClintic. "We made a couple of runs at them, very short runs, but the kids played hard. That's a good ball club we just opened up with and it was a challenge."
The boys will travel to Butler County on Friday night for the first district game of the season in a girl/boy doubleheader with girls tip off scheduled for 6pm. Lady Cats Fall To Breckinridge 55-51 In Season Opener Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: A nine-point lead disappeared from the Lady Cats last night at ECHS for the 2019-20 season opener in the third quarter as Breckinridge County surged back on top with an 11-0 run, from which Edmonson County never recovered. A 16-point first half performance by senior Lauren Ballance led the way for Edmonson County early as she connected on three 3 pointers and knocked down 3 of 4 free throws. The Lady Cats led 12-10 after the first and held a 27-24 lead at the half. Edmonson County jumped out to a 6-0 run to start the third quarter where they had extended their lead to 9, but Breckinridge adjusted and allowed only two more points from Ballance in the second half. The Edmonson County lead was erased after a 11-0 run from the Lady Tigers to take a 35-33 lead in the third quarter. Edmonson County tied the score at 35 late in the third, but Breckinridge took the lead with their next basket and held it for the rest of the game. Despite the onslaught of three pointers from the Lady Tigers (10) and the loss after holding a decent lead, Coach Bart Weaver had plenty of positives to discuss after the game. "I'm just so stinking proud of these girls," he said. "The effort, the detail to game plan, but we just missed a few shots here and there. You know, if we'd had an 'and-one' there, or made that duck (in) right there underneath, you know..." Ballance finished with 18 points, Emma Rose Vincent put up 12 points and 7 rebounds while going 8/10 from the free throw line. Katie Lindsey added 8, Mia Goad added 7, and Madison Harrison had 6.
"This is one of the better teams in the region," Weaver said. "This just tells our girls that we can play with anybody in our region and anybody on our schedule." Edmonson County will travel to Butler County on Friday for the first district game of the year in a girl/boy doubleheader with the girls tip off scheduled for 6pm. Darren Doyle, story: Madison Doyle, photos: Both the Edmonson County Wildcats and Lady Cats are set to begin the 2019-20 season tonight at home against Breckinridge County with a girl/boy doubleheader beginning with the girls game at 5:30pm. Both the boys and girls teams lost only one senior each last year and both head coaches, Mike McClintic (boys) and Bart Weaver (girls) are excited about what this season could bring. We spoke with each coach yesterday to discuss the upcoming season that begins tonight. Wildcats The boys team had plans of bringing back four starters from last year's 12-18 squad (losing last year's senior Griffin Spainhoward) but a summer baseball injury from the team's leading scorer and rebounder, junior Chaz Wilson, has altered that plan. Coach Mac said Wilson, who averaged a double/double last year (14ppg, 10rpg) was playing first base on a traveling league earlier this summer when he jumped to catch an errant throw. He crushed his ankle as he landed, which required a combination of plates and screws to repair. Wilson is currently rehabbing and McClintic said the timetable for his return is unknown; however, it could be within two weeks or as late as January. "I'm not sure about his exact return time," he said. "He obviously wants to come back as soon as possible, and so do we, but we want to make sure he's healthy and ready. If we have to wait a month or more, then that's what we need to do, in the meantime, we're looking at it as 'next man up.' We say that a lot and we mean it. If someone goes down or isn't available, we've got to have somebody to step up and be the next man up." Coach Mac says he's been pleased with what he's seen in practice so far. Returning will be senior guards Nick Clemmons (8.2ppg) and Dalton Decker (12.5ppg) with Decker at point and Clemmons as shooting guard. Decker is expected to lead the floor while the team will look for Clemmons as their three-point shooter. Senior Eli Booker returns at center and McClintic says he's coming back with a better feel around the rim. Senior Mason Pierce will retake his role as forward, a scrappy player who's known for getting to loose balls and rebounds, and junior Daniel Woosley will fill the role of the other forward that will also show shooting ability this season. "We're going to be a little deeper this year," said Mac. "That will help us as we try to run more man-to-man and motion. We're going to be more aggressive on both ends of the floor. Our guys are showing good leadership already and that's really going to help us." The roster is made up of only juniors and seniors, 7 of each, something the Wildcats haven't experienced for several seasons. "That leadership extends out to guys coming off the bench, too. Trent Taylor, Gavin Rose, Luke Meredith, Isaiah Johnson, Jon Smith, Lane Lindsey, Houston Vincent, and Dylan Lindsey, everybody has a role and I think when we all fill them like we're trying, we have a shot at this district." The District 12, Grayson, Trinity, and Butler, which Mac says is wide open. The boys are scheduled for two district games on the road in just the second and third games of the season. "Breckinridge is a tough team and we're looking forward to a challenge tonight," he said. "I think we have a legit shot of having a great season and competing in the district but we'll see in 2-3 weeks where we stand after these early district games." If the team can compete well early without Chaz Wilson, McClintic says he looks forward to what can happen once he returns and the guys are running on all cylinders. Lady Cats
Just like the boys, the Lady Cats also lost only one senior, which was Chanley Logsdon (9.2ppg, leading 3-pt shooter), but Coach Bart Weaver it may take more than one person to fill her shoes. "She brought much more to the table than just shooting threes," he said. "She was our leader, she did a lot of things so we've been talking about leadership a lot this year." Like McClintic, Weaver looks to have four returning starters which could come in handy when another word is mentioned, which is "three-peat." The Lady Cats enjoyed back-to-back district titles over the past two season, something not accomplished in Edmonson County since the 1994-1995 seasons under former Coach Kevin Jackson. A basketball district three-peat has only been accomplished once in school history, when the boys did it in 1973, 74, and 75. "Yes, we said 'three-peat' already," said Weaver. "We talk about it often. The district is wide open, very similar to last year and I really like where the team is right now. We want to accomplish some big tasks this year. In August we committed to being in better shape, so we've put in the work in conditioning and weights. We want to be stronger than our opponents." Returning starters will be point guard junior Katie Lindsey (11ppg) and senior guard Lauren Ballance (9.7ppg, 6.5rpg). Leading rebounder senior Madison Harrison (6ppg, 7rpg), and Emma Rose Vincent (8.6ppg, 5rpg) returns as starting center. Senior Mia Goad (5ppg) will be the other starting forward. Senior Macie McCombs will likely be the sixth player, who Weaver says will be a solid contributor this season. "At first I was a little worried about our depth but after seeing some younger players step up, I feel pretty good about it. You'll probably see some of Lily Jayne Vincent, Jadlyn Simon, who's really improved, Shea VanMeter, Paige Wolfe, and Maham Shahbaz throughout the year." Last year's team finished 24-8 and Coach Weaver says he's expecting another successful season. "We're excited and I like what I see. I like where our girls are. It's a wide-open district and we plan to go out there and compete." Girls action is scheduled to begin at 5:30 tonight at ECHS with the boys starting around 7:30pm. The WildcatsLive crew with carry both the audio broadcast and video stream for both games on the Edmonson Voice Facebook page and website. |
