Morgan Skaggs returns against Muhlenburg. Laney Meredith during 3rd Regional Tournament. The ECHS Lady Cat Volleyball season came to an end last night as they fell to Owensboro Catholic in the 3rd Region Semifinals. The Lady Aces put on an impressive display, defeating ECHS in three sets, (25 – 15) (25 – 19) (25 – 10). Fans and parents will tell you that the girls have been fun to watch all season long, through good and bad, and that they are a great group of ladies who played each game with all their hearts. Lone senior and co-captain Julie Sullivan did a great job with her leadership and outstanding back row play. She'll be missed next season, and we wish her the best.
Editor's note: We send out a personal thanks to our volleyball correspondent and contributor, Granville Meredith. He covered each game, and provided quotes, storylines, and photos throughout the entire season. After last night's game he said, "I've been so proud of these girls all season long and they've made this game so much fun to watch. Keep the desire to make yourself and your team better next year!" The Lady Cats end the year with a winning 17 – 15 record. Thanks for a fun season and a job well done. We all look forward to next season. EV Staff, Granville Meredith, Contributor, Photos The Lady Cats defeated 10th district champs, Muhlenburg County last night at the 3rd Regional Tournament, hosted by Ohio County. Mikayla Lindsey and Laney Meredith lead the team on the night with some great serves as two-thirds of the popular hashtag, #bumpsetboom attack. Fans in attendance also saw key plays on the back row from Julie Sullivan and Mary Chris Waddell. The "Morgan Mix" of Morgan Skaggs and Morgan Miller played well on the net for the Lady Cats, and all resulted in a 25 – 12 victory in the first set. ECHS dominated the second set with serves, blocks, and digs which led to a 25 – 9 win. The 3rd set was far more competitive, as Lady Cat errors and bad passing gave life to the Muhlenburg team. With EC in the lead 20 – 15 Head coach Heather Vincent allowed team reserves some playing time and the Lady Cats pulled out a 25 – 17 upset. “I didn’t have my best game out there tonight but glad my teammates had my back... these girls play with heart," said freshman Caitlin Simon. “ I will be ready tomorrow I promise” The girls were in good spirits after the game and look forward to tonight's match up with Owensboro Catholic. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 start. EV Staff, Granville Meredith, Contributor/Photo The Edmonson County Wildcat football team scored a big victory last Friday night as they defeated Monore County 9-7 in Tompkinsville. The win secured the Wildcats a #3 seed in the upcoming KHSAA Class AAA State Playoffs.
The first quarter saw both teams' defenses stop their opponent. Both teams traded two punts each in the quarter. The second quarter was much of the same, but the Wildcats were able to pin the Falcons deep into their own territory by freshmen punter Brett Brannon’s punt that put Monroe County inside their own 5-yard line. The Wildcats forced a three and out and got the ball back at the Falcon 35-yard line. The Wildcats moved the ball into the redzone before finally scoring on a 2 yard sneak by sophomore quarterback Jake Dial. The extra point was wide to keep the score 6-0 with just 12 seconds left in the half. In the second half, the Wildcat defense came up with a big play as senior defensive linemen Austin Lemieux-Gravil intercepted a pass and returned 25 yards to the Falcon 15 yard line. The Wildcats could not come up with points on the drive but it kept Monroe County in poor field position. The Wildcat defense forced a punt and the Wildcat special teams came up with their own big play as senior Brent Foley knifed through and blocked the Falcon punt. The Falcons defense stood strong and forced a field goal attempt by the Wildcats. Brannon nailed the 25 yard field goal for a 9-0 lead with 3:21 left in the third quarter. The Falcons moved the ball into Wildcat territory on their next drive, but the Wildcats stopped Monroe County on downs. The Falcons forced a Wildcat punt and got their offense going. After a long drive, the Falcons punched a touchdown in on a 6-yard run. They made the extra point to cut the lead to 9-7 with just 5:56 left in the game. The Wildcats were forced to punt on their next series giving the Falcons the ball back. However, the Wildcat defense held strong as senior Drew Decker laid a big hit on the running back as the Falcons tried to use a screen pass. The Wildcat offense then ran the clock out to secure the 9-7 victory. Head football coach Kyle Pierce says that he was proud of his team. “I really am happy for our guys. This was a good win for us on the road at a place that is not easy to win at. We didn’t exactly play great at times, but we made big plays when we had to, and did not let them big play us. We had some guys step up and it is always good to see at this time of year. They were much bigger and stronger than us, but our kids fought and found a way to win. Hopefully, that will help us these next few weeks on the road.” The Wildcats now travel to Butler County this Friday night to play the Bears on Halloween night. Pierce says that the Wildcats need to continue to play consistent. “Butler County has had a nice year. They have a big line and a lot of weapons offensively. Coach Emmick does a great job over there and we know we will have to play well to be able to win. With the playoffs coming up, you want to keep the momentum going and keep everybody healthy. Hopefully, all the Wildcat fans will get their trick or treating done early and travel down highway 70 to cheer on this bunch of Wildcats. They’ve really come together at the right time of the year.” Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 in Morgantown. Edmonson Voice Staff Granville Meredith, Contributor Darren Doyle, Photos After defeating Grayson County Monday night in 3 straight sets to move on to the Championship game of the 2014 12th District Volleyball Tournament, the Edmonson County Lady Cats were ready for the showdown with Whitesville Trinity in the finals last night. Both teams were highly entertaining and competitive as EC jumped out to an early lead, remained in control and won the first set with a score of 25 – 21. The second set found Trinity highly motivated, giving a very solid performance and winning 17 – 25. Momentum shifted back to ECHS during the third set with the crowd becoming nothing short of electric as the Lady Cats dominated the entire set with a 25 -12 win. After both teams gained better control of their emotions, they each settled in and an old fashioned barn burner was seen by all in attendance. The fourth set was back and forth the entire match, but Trinity came out on top 23 -25. The final set felt like a race to the finish with most of the crowd on their feet, and Trinity controlled the lead and tempo from the start. The Lady Cats just couldn't seem to find their rhythm and Trinity held on to win 15-7, becoming the 12th District Champions. Head Coach Heather Ritter was proud of the team's performance and looks for the Lady Cats to advance far into the regional tournament which will be held at Ohio County. We encourage our readers to get behind the Lady Cats and we hope to see the Regional Championship Trophy displayed at ECHS. All Tournament Team and All-Academic Team below. Edmonson Voice Staff Darren Doyle photos/video It was an emotional night for 9 senior football players, two cheerleaders, and 7 members of the marching band as they graced the field for their final home games last night. There was a good crowd at Wildcat Stadium for the festivities as the Hart County Raiders tried to spoil the night. The Wildcats got off to a great start by scoring a touchdown and the extra point just minutes into the game. With solid defense that turned into offense, the Wildcats had two interceptions, one for thirty yards from Senior Marcus Kinser, and another from Freshman Zach Farmer, which turned out to be an 80 yard return for a touchdown. Frustration began to set in for the Raiders after the Cats made it 25-0 with 6:00 left in the third, and penalty after penalty piled up for Hart County. Referees seemingly threw flag after flag, separated scuffles, and scolded several Raider players which eventually led to two of them being ejected. With 8:25 left in the game, the Hart County Athletic Director requested permission to end the game, resulting in a Wildcat win. Check out all the photo and video highlights below as well as Coach Pierce's thoughts on the game. Darren Doyle, photos We'll have a full recap of the game later, so enjoy this slideshow of Seniors from Wildcat Football, Cheerleaders, and the Marching Band. Check out the latest Wildcat Alley...and don't forget, it's Senior Night at Wildcat Stadium as the football team hosts Hart County. Go Cats!
Edmonson Voice Staff Granville Meredith, Contributor, Photos It was a great turnout at ECHS last night as the Lady Cats celebrated "Dig Pink," which was for cancer awareness, Senior Night, and to honor some special people. The Freshmen and JV teams both won easily in two sets each. Seniors Logan Evans and Julie Sullivan were honored for the years they and their families have been a part of Athletics at ECHS. They were presented medallions from Assistant Athletic Director Mike McClintic as well as gifts from their teammates and the volleyball boosters. As the senior festivities closed, the team announced that last night's play would be in honor of ECHS student Shirley Mae Jaggers, who is currently fighting cancer, and four-year old Hallie Jane Stice, also a cancer patient. Shirley Mae and Hallie Jane were each honorary co-captains for the game, so Halie's older sister, nine-year old Kennady Stice stood in for the both of them. Upon player introductions Head Coach Heather Ritter temporarily stepped down and put Kennady in as Head coach for the night. Before the start of the game there was a moment of silence for Tammy Jaggers Duncan, an avid ECHS athletics booster, who lost her life Sunday night in a tragic vehicle accident. There was a special feeling in the air as the Lady Cats won handily over the Lady Raiders of Hart County in two short sets. The dig pink night was a great success and ECHS would like to thank all the sponsors, volunteers, families, and the fans for their support. ECHS volleyball coaches, parents, players and family send their thoughts and prayers to the Duncan family. Edmonson Voice Staff Granville Meredith, Contributor, Photos The ECHS Lady Cat volleyball team traveled to Henderson this week to play in the Jerry Mezur Spikefest Tournament. They began pool play on Friday night to determine which division that they would be competing in. After losses to South Warren and Breckinridge County and a win against Webster County, the Lady Cats were placed in the Bronze division, having to face McClean County. The Lady Cats won (25 – 21) and (25 – 12) which put them in the championship game against Franklin County. Behind great serves, great blocking, and great kills by all, ECHS was crowned the champion, bringing home first place in the Bronze Division. The Lady Cats have their final home game tonight which will be Dig Pink Night and Senior Night. Freshman, JV, and Varsity will square off with Hart County starting at 5pm. On Tuesday ECHS Volleyball will travel to Allen County for their last game of the season then will move on to play in the District Tournament, which will be hosted by ECHS. The team wishes to express their thanks to all the parents, family, and fans for their wonderful support this season as well as all the wonderful sponsors that have contributed to this year's success. It's busy in Wildcat Alley this week...we hear from ECHS Cross Country (and Senior Chance Stockdale), Golf, Volleyball, and Football! Daniel Bolton, Fishing Contributor Fishing Report 10/1/14 Nolin Lake Water Temperature 75 Water Clarity: Fair/Stained We are still waiting for the cool autumn air to start the aggressive feeding patters associated with fall fishing. With that being said, bass fishing is still very productive during this current warm spell. It seems like fish can be caught in a variety of ways and locations, which confirms that we are certainly in the transition phase from summer/fall. The past few trips on the water have resulted in bass being caught shallow and deep, around cover or nothing, and on top and bottom. So, just pick your preferred method and go to work! The best bite seems to start around 7AM. Afternoon trips have been slower, but there are still fish to be caught before and after dark but it seems to be hit-and-miss for the most part. The best numbers of fish have been taken in the mouths of major creeks with access to deep water close by in 5-15 feet of water. Big worms are still producing nice largemouth along with the trusty jig/craw. Other creature baits (lizards, beavers, etc.) are also productive around cover such as brush piles and timber. This weekend will bring the first major cold front of the fall and should prove interesting when it comes to how the fish react. The Corps will begin pulling the lake down on Oct. 15th rapidly, and the lake will be at winter pool by Nov. 15th. The next two weeks will be the best time to catch some nice fish while there’s still plenty of acreage for them to roam. Enjoy your time on the water and remember to always practice safe boating by wearing life jackets and paying close attention during low light hours with your lights on. Get in there and fish! |
