Lady Cats Win 67-54, Wildcats Fall 59-47 Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: Edmonson County's basketball teams split a girl/boy doubleheader against District 12 opponent Butler County tonight at ECHS. The Lady Cats defeated the Lady Bears 67-54 but the Wildcats fell 59-47. The Lady Cats were paced by junior point guard Katie Lindsey, who had 24 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists. The girls had a solid start and shot the ball extremely well, connecting on 53% from the field and 60% behind the three-point line. They out-rebounded the Lady Bears 31-21 and shot better from the free throw line (69%) than they had in most games all season. Madison Harrison notched another double-double on the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Emma Rose Vincent saw early foul trouble and had to sit much of the first half; however, she bounced back in a big way in the second half and put up 12 points along with 8 rebounds. Lauren Ballance had 9 points and 3 rebounds, Macie McCombs had 8 points and 4 rebounds, and Lily Jayne Vincent had 2 points and 4 rebounds. Edmonson County improved to 14-8 on the season and are now 4-1 in District 12 play. The regular scheduled games against Daviess County has been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb 8th at 3pm and the Hart County game originally set for Tuesday, February 4th has been rescheduled for Monday, February 17th at 5:30pm. In between games, Edmonson County Superintendent of Schools Patrick Waddell was honored for his 27 years of service in education, with the last 16 years as superintendent in EC. It's the longest tenure as the head of the school district in Edmonson County. Waddell was presented a plaque from ECHS Principal Brian Alexander as he was given a standing ovation. The Wildcats struggled against Butler County tonight as the Bears bested them on the boards 27-19. While Dalton Decker's 25 point performance was impressive, not much more offense was generated by the rest of the team in the 59-47 loss.
Edmonson County looked strong early and had tied Butler County 26-26 at the half, but a huge third quarter doomed the Wildcats as the Bears went on a 15-0 run and outscored the Cats 19-6 in the quarter. In addition to Decker, Mason Pierce added 6, Chaz Wilson had 5, Gavin Rose had 3, and Eli Booker, Daniel Woosley, Jon Smith, and Trent Taylor each added two points each. Edmonson's boys are now 9-11 on the season and 2-3 in district play. They are scheduled to take on Grayson County on February 10th at home in a girl/boy doubleheader.

Three Lady Cats In Double Figures In The Win Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: Senior Madison Harrison collected her 500th career rebound (503 total) as an Edmonson County Lady Cat tonight in a 61-53 win over Metcalfe County tonight at ECHS. Coach Bart Weaver said good rebounders often go unnoticed because points are what keep the interest of most fans. "I'm so proud of her," he said. "We've got three. I think Lauren (Ballance) will probably get that in a game or two, Emma Rose is about 40 away. If you can have three with 500 rebounds, well that just tells you about the character of these girls. Rebounding is because you want to. It's about desire. I'm proud of all them, but Madison--she's consistently, for the two years I've had them, she's been a beast on the boards. She goes and goes and goes relentlessly. She doesn't get a lot of accolades sometimes, but she's just as big as anybody on this team as far as importance." Harrison, who was also the 2020 Basketball Homecoming Queen, finished with 6 points and 5 rebounds. Junior point guard Katie Lindsey led the Lady Cats with 18 points, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds, which follows up a 22 point, 7 assist, 6 steal performance in the win against Franklin-Simpson last night.
She led the charge in the first half that helped fend off a Lady Hornet run that tied the score at 26 at the half. Despite early foul trouble from both Harrison and Emma Rose Vincent, which caused them to sit much of the first half, Edmonson County was still efficient on the boards as a team with 30 total rebounds. Vincent finished with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Macie McCombs scored 11 points with the help of three 3-pointers, and added 7 rebounds. Metcalfe County surged in the fourth quarter with a big run that cut Edmonson County's lead to only 4 points, but thanks to a huge third quarter from the Lady Cats, where they outscored the Lady Hornets 21-8 to take a 47-34 lead going into the final quarter, Metcalfe could get no closer. Edmonson County was able to spread the floor and wear down the clock as they weathered defensive pressure from the Lady Hornets for the win. The Lady Cats are now 13-8 on the season and 3-1 in District 12 play. They have won their last 7 out of 8 games. They are scheduled to take on Butler County at home this Friday in a girl/boy doubleheader with a 6pm tip. Lady Hornets Push Through 40-37 Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: The Lady Cats struggled against the Hancock County tonight at the Owensboro Sportscenter as they fell 40-37. Despite besting the Lady Hornets in rebounding (31-20) and keeping the turnovers close (EC 13, HC 11), Edmonson County didn't fare well against the physical play of Hancock. Both Emma Rose Vincent and Madison Harrison notched double-doubles (12 points 12 rebounds and 7 points 11 rebounds, respectively), but there wasn't much more offense from the rest of the team. "We missed some shots right around the basket and that's haunted us all year," said Coach Bart Weaver. "We did it again tonight and we missed some in a three-point game. When you miss 5 or 6 shots right around the basket, it's going to come back to haunt you."
In addition to Vincent and Harrison, Katie Lindsey had 6 points, Lauren Ballance and Paige Wolfe each had 5, and Lily Jayne Vincent had 2. The loss ended Edmonson County's winning streak at 5. They are scheduled to travel to Franklin-Simpson on Monday night for a JV/V game. The Lady Cats are now 11-8 on the season. Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: The winning continued Saturday night for the Edmonson County Wildcats as they fought off the comeback effort from the Hancock County Hornets and won their sixth game in a row, 67-60. The teams battled each other at a neutral site, which was the Owensboro Sportscenter. Edmonson County got off to a good start as they knocked down some early shots and took a 17-10 lead after the first quarter. Turnovers plagued the Wildcats in the second quarter and the Hornets bounced back as they outscored the Cats 15-8, thanks to some hot three-point shooting from Hancock to tie the score at 25-25 at the half. The Wildcats had much better defense in the third quarter, which not only hindered Hancock County's three-pointers, but they also closed off back door lanes and the paint, which forced turnovers against the Hornets. Edmonson County was able to convert in transition and regained the lead, 39-31 going into the fourth.
Hancock County wasn't going away anytime soon and their defensive efforts were turned up several notches as they caused the Cats to force shots and get out of their rhythm. Hancock was able to put together a 10-2 run that tied the score at 41 each with 4:27 to play. Edmonson County stepped it up once again and finished out the quarter on an 18-8 run, hitting free throws in the final two minutes (81% for the game). The Wildcats out-rebounded the Hornets 30-18 and kept their turnovers down to only 10. The Wildcats had three players in double figures: Dalton Decker, (20pts 9 rebounds) Chaz Wilson (12pts 9 rebounds), and Daniel Woosley (10pts 3 rebounds). Eli Booker had 8 points and 2 rebounds, Nick Clemmons had 7 points and 6 rebounds, Gavin Rose added 3 points and 1 rebound. "It took everything we had to win, 'cause like we always say after a game, we do some crazy things that makes the game interesting for a while, but I'm proud of the way they hung together, they pulled it out, played good defense, and took care of the ball when we had to," said Coach Mike McClintic. While the team has individuals capable of putting up big numbers at times, Coach Mac said he'd rather see multiple players in the scorebook because that's when his team seems to have the most success. "That means they're sharing the ball and it means (the opponent) can't just concentrate on one guy. That's huge for us." Edmonson County is now 9-10 on the season and is scheduled to take on Butler County on January 31st at home in a District 12 girl/boy doubleheader. Girls Win 49-32, Boys Win 65-57 Over Whitesville-Trinity Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: Coach Mike McClintic smiled when asked if the third win in a row tonight was a legit winning streak. "For now," he said. The Wildcats are getting better at playing as a team, turnovers are shrinking, and the guys are hitting the boards harder than ever. Tonight's 65-57 win over district opponent Whitesville-Trinity featured three Wildcats in double figures, with 8 more getting into the score book. The guys that didn't score contributed in other ways. The team had a low 10 turnovers for the game and out-rebounded the Raiders 34-25. Despite a 16-6 run from Trinity in the third quarter that cut Edmonson's lead to only 3, the Wildcats pushed through and took a 43-35 lead going into the fourth quarter. Eli Booker, Nick Clemmons, and Dalton Decker led the way in scoring that helped give Edmonson the lead in the first half, while Chaz Wilson, Daniel Woosley, and Mason Pierce each made some big shots in the second half. Wilson led in scoring with 17 points and 6 rebounds, Booker had 10 points and 7 rebounds, and Gavin Rose added 10 points. Clemmons added 8, Decker had 7 points and 6 rebounds, Daniel Woosley had 6, Mason Pierce added 5, and Trent Taylor had 2. The Wildcats are now 6-10 on the year and 2-2 in District 12 play. Lady Cats 49-Trinity 32 Led by Emma Rose Vincent's 14 points and 7 rebounds, and 13 points from Macie McCombs, the Lady Cats took care of the Lady Raiders to start homecoming night off right. Trinity struck first but the last lead they had over Edmonson was at 4-3. Once the Lady Cats took the lead, they never lost it again. The Lady Cats grabbed a narrow 24-20 lead at the half and continued with solid play in the third. Coach Weaver was able to bring in some younger players in the final minutes for some varsity experience.
Katie Lindsey scored 12 points, Lauren Ballance had 3 points and 10 rebounds, Paige Wolfe added 3 points, and Homecoming Queen Madison Harrison had two points along with Hallie Cassady. Edmonson County had a whopping 38 team rebounds and shot 42% from the field. Free throws are still a thorn in Edmonson's side as the girls shot only 33% from the line, but it was also the third win in a row for the Lady Cats. The Lady Cats are 9-7 on the season and 2-2 in District 12 play. Edmonson Voice Sports:
Several players contributed to the Lady Cats' win over Logan County last night as four players put up double figures, in addition to one with another double-double. Edmonson County won 62-41 over the Lady Cougars as Lauren Ballance and Katie Lindsey led the way offensively with 17 points each. Emma Rose Vincent added 13 points, and Madison Harrison added 11 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds. Edmonson County shot 42.6% from the field, 40% from three point range, but only 57% from the free throw line. Macie McCombs added 3 points and Paige Wolfe added 1 point for Edmonson County. The Lady Cats are now 8-7 on the season, have won two in a row, and their last 4 of 6. They are scheduled to take on Trinity at home on Friday night at the 2020 Basketball Homecoming with tip off scheduled for 5:30pm. Homecoming ceremonies will take place immediately after the girls game, with the boys game following. Back-to-Back Wins For Edmonson County as Cats Top Raiders 78-76 Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: It was another team effort that led to better shot selections and high percentage shots for the Wildcats as they overcame a first quarter deficit from the visiting Hart County Raiders. Hart was on fire in the first quarter as they connected on six-3 pointers, four of which came from senior guard Travis Shuffett, who averages only 5.7 points per game. The Raiders looked like they were going to run the Cats out of their own gym, with double-digit leads in the first few minutes. Hart led 23-14 after the first. Edmonson County turned up their defensive pressure and forced 8 Raider turnovers in the second quarter. Points in transition helped the Wildcats outscore the Raiders 25-19 in the quarter and they trailed at halftime 42-39. The third quarter was sloppy for Edmonson County as they got out of their offensive rhythm and forced shots at times. Hart County was able to extend their lead to 60-55 after three quarters, thanks to a 10-0 run from Hart. Edmonson County regrouped and started doing the same things that brought them success in the second- defensive pressure that forced more Hart County turnovers (22 for the game), better shot selection which led to easier points from Dalton Decker (25pts) and Eli Booker (18pts), and staying close in the rebounding battle, (Hart: 27 EC: 25).
Key free throws down the stretch from Booker, Decker, Daniel Woosley, and Mason Pierce also helped secure the win. Two crucial trips to the line resulted in misses, but offensive rebounds by Edmonson County that allowed them to keep their possessions alive. Hart County hit a three-pointer at the buzzer but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats won their second game in a row for a final score of 78-76. "I was really proud of the kids tonight," said Coach Mac. "We got down early but battled back, cut it to 3 at the half, and we just kept working and working and pulled this one out. I mean, we made it interesting, but they like making it tough on me," he said with a laugh. Mac said the team did what it needed to do at the right times; getting stops late, grabbing rebounds, and making shots when the game was on the line, despite times when Edmonson County strayed from the game plan. "We consider even rushing shots not taking care of the ball," he added. "We forced some shots we didn't need to be taking, there were times we should've been running through our offense--all the way through it to ball reversal, and we'd rush it. I thought we did better in the fourth quarter with it when we had to, and some guys hit some big free throws." Mac also credited the bench for quality minutes from Luke Meredith, Trent Taylor, Gavin Rose, Jon Smith, and Isaiah Johnson. Edmonson County is now 5-10 on the season and will face Trinity in a rematch at home on Friday night for the 2020 Basketball Homecoming. Girls action is scheduled for a 5:30pm tip. Edmonson Defeats Trinity 64-59 Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: A total team effort was left on the court last night in Whitesville from the Wildcats as they played well as a unit in their first district win of the season, defeating the Trinity Raiders 64-59. Despite 57% shooting from the free throw line, the Wildcats nailed four crucial foul shots in the final minute to hold off a big Trinity run and ice the game for the road win. Edmonson County lost the rebounding battle (25-17) and committed 16 turnovers, but nine different Wildcats put up points in the district battle. It seemed when Edmonson needed a shot, they made it. When they needed a stop, they got it. These are things that haven't happened often in a frustrating season for Coach Mike McClintic and his Wildcats. A few plays went their way at crucial times, the boys had a much better overall shot selection, and when the game was on the line, both Mason Pierce and Nick Clemmons nailed their free throws down the stretch that extinguished any hopes of a Raider comeback. Edmonson County got off to a good start and led 15-10 after the first quarter and an encore second quarter gave them a 35-23 lead at the half. Chaz Wilson aggravated his ankle just as the half came to a close but seemed to walk it off during the break; however, a play early in the third caused some real pain for him and he was taken out of the game. Wilson missed the first part of the season as a result of a serious injury he obtained in a summer baseball game. The coaching staff said Wilson is having the ankle seen by a physician asap. Trinity started inching their way back during the fourth as they began making 3s, getting to the foul line and crashing the boards. Leading only by two points, Edmonson County's Eli Booker scored on a layup to give them a 60-56 lead with 1:05 remaining in the game. Trinity's Kevin Foster hit a three-pointer with 50.1 seconds remaining that cut the Wildcat lead to 60-59; however, the shot would be the Raiders' final points as Edmonson County drew fouls on their end and made the crucial free throws to hang on for the win. "I'm so proud of them boys...they ran our game plan perfect. There was a few times where we got in a little bit of a hurry and had a couple of defensive breakdowns, but they had the guts and the heart in them, a lot of pride and a lot of energy," said Coach Mac.
"We had a good week of practice, going at it pretty hard, so it carried over into tonight and Darren, I've told you 60,000 times, that's why I love these kids." Dalton Decker finished with 17 points, Nick Clemmons had 11, Daniel Woosley had 9, Mason Pierce and Chaz Wilson had 7 each, Jon Smith had 6, Eli Booker had 3, and both Trent Taylor and Gavin Rose had 2 each. Edmonson County is now 4-10 on the year and 1-2 in District 12 play. The Wildcats are scheduled to take on Hart County on Monday at home beginning at 7:15pm. Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: Improved defense and rebounding the second half was key for the Lady Cats as they notched another district win on the road last night in Whitesville. Edmonson County wanted to push the ball against the Lady Raiders last night but some early turnovers and transition points from Trinity altered that plan in the first. At times the Lady Cats couldn't buy a bucket with a coupon code in the first half, shooting only 23% from the field and missing all 6 of their 3-point attempts. Their free throw shooting was also bad (55%) in the first half, but their defense and rebounding kept them in the game, despite an 8-2 run from the Lady Raiders to end the second quarter as EC trailed 23-22 at the half. But it was the defense and rebounding that got turned up a couple clicks in the third quarter as they began to force turnovers and convert on the offensive end. A shot began to fall here, a three-pointer there, and it seemed Edmonson was getting to all the loose balls. The Lady Cats outscored Trinity 15-5 in the third quarter to take a 37-28 lead that they'd never lose again. The Lady Cats won 59-45. Edmonson County had four starters in double figures and nearly two of them with double-doubles. Emma Rose Vincent led in scoring with 16 points while grabbing 7 points, (also 4 assists), Lauren Ballance added 15 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists, and Katie Lindsey added 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists. Madison Harrison put up very impressive numbers in her complete game with 10 points, 10 rebounds, 4 blocked shots, and 4 assists. "Being down one point at the half and shooting 23%, and making 7 turnovers in the first half, that didn't make me feel too good," said Head Coach Bart Weaver. He then discussed the second half. "We got quite a few transition points in the second half and I thought that was key. We had 14 turnovers, which is two more than I wanted, but it's a road win in the district." "There's not a game that goes by, any team that I'm coaching, that the first few minutes of the third quarter is the biggest part of the game. That made me proud right there, that they took care of something that I tell them almost everyday."
Macie McCombs finished with 3 points and 3 rebounds. Edmonson County wound up shooting 34% from the field, 18% from three point, and 68% from the line. While the shooting percentage won no awards last night, they swiped 36 rebounds as a team, compared to only 16 by Trinity. They also forced 21 turnovers against the Lady Raiders. Edmonson County is now 7-7 on the season and 2-1 in District 12 play. They are scheduled to take on Logan County on Monday on the road with a tip time of 7:30pm. ECHS Senior Receives $1K Scholarship Luke Meredith, a senior guard for the Edmonson County Wildcats, was awarded the All A Classic Region 3 Academic Scholarship at Saturday night's game against the Owensboro Catholic Aces.
The scholarships are awarded to recipients from small schools all throughout the state each year. Luke was the $1,000 winner from the All A schools in Region 3. He is the son of Michael and Marsha Meredith. Owensboro Catholic Advances Over Edmonson County 83-58 Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: A big second half from the Owensboro Catholic Aces doomed Edmonson County tonight as ECHS hosted the All A Region 3 Classic. Both teams traded punches early and despite hot shooting from Nick Clemmons and Dalton Decker, the Aces took a 19-13 lead after the first quarter and led 32-27 at the half. Catholic outscored Edmonson County by 12 more in the third and the game was out of reach midway through the fourth quarter as the Aces went on to win 83-58. "We played a good first half but then we came out the second and didn’t play with the same intensity of the first half," said Head Coach Mike McClintic. "I don’t know if we were satisfied or what but it’s just little things that seem to trouble us. Things like defensive breakdowns, not getting back in defensive transition, defensive rotations, rushing shots, and forcing shots."
Coach Mac said he was focused on getting his guys to play more as a team unit and not to worry about things outside the team's control. "I consider these boys family to me," he said. "They're like my sons." The Wildcats were paced by Mason Pierce's 16 points. Dalton Decker added 12, Chaz Wilson had 10, Gavin Rose had 6, Nick Clemmons had 5, Eli Booker added 4, Trent Taylor had 3, Daniel Woosley had 2, and Isaiah Johnson also had 2. Edmonson County is now 3-10 on the season and won't play again until Friday, January 10 at Trinity. Lady Aces Top Lady Cats 55-45 Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: After holding the Owensboro Catholic Lady Aces to only 2 points in the first quarter, the Lady Cats saw OC rally in the second with a 19-5 quarter that would keep Edmonson County from advancing to the finals of the All A Region 3 Classic, hosted at ECHS. Edmonson County's defense forced several turnovers on the Lady Aces early but the tables were turned when Catholic's defense did the same to the Lady Cats in the second. The difference was that Catholic turned nearly all those turnovers into points and OC led 21-14 at the half. Edmonson County scrapped back with the help of the sharp shooting Macie McCombs, who put up 14 points on 4-three pointers but the size and length of the Lady Aces were too much for Edmonson to overcome as they fell 55-45.
"I thought our game plan was solid, holding them to 9-2 in the first quarter," said Head Coach Bart Weaver. He later discussed the bounce-back from the Lady Aces. "They played more like the way they play, and we knew it was coming," he said. "But you have to find a way to fight against it." Emma Rose Vincent scored 12 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, while going 4-4 from the free throw line. The remaining box score was Katie Lindsey 3, Lily J. Vincent 3, Lauren Ballance 1, Madison Harrison 1, Paige Wolfe 1. The Lady Cats are not scheduled to play again until Friday, January 10th when they travel to Trinity for a makeup game from earlier in the season. |
