For the second time in the fall season, the Midway women's golf team took home a first place finish in a tournament, but this time it was the River States Conference Fall Preview at Lassing Pointe Golf Club.
The 52-hole tournament was broken up into two days with 27 holes being played on both Monday and Tuesday. On Monday the teams played the first round and half of the second, then on Tuesday, they played the remainder of the second round as well as the third round. The Eagles finished the tournament with a three round total of 994, good enough for a first place finish by 28 strokes. Indiana University East finished in second place with a three round total of 1022, while Asbury (Ky.) claimed third with a 1031. "This was a great victory for our ladies. They fought through tough, cold and rainy conditions on Monday and played some really good golf," said head coach, Otis Smith. Kelsey Whitehouse (Bowling Green, Ky.) and former ECHS standout Kayla Meredith (Brownsville, Ky.) both finished the tournament on a high note. Whitehouse shot back-to-back 89's in the first two rounds, but she fired an 81 in the final round to finish with a 259 to finish in ninth place. Meredith on the other hand, finished with a 92 and a 90 in her first and second rounds, but came out and got back on track in the final round with an 83 to finish in 13th with a 265 overall. Lassing Pointe will serve as the host of the River States Conference Championship which will be played on April 24-25, 2017. The Eagles will return to the links on October 2-3 when they play in the UPIKE Fall Invitational at StoneCrest Golf Course.

Darren Doyle, story and photos The Edmonson County Lady Cats extended their winning streak to eight consecutive games last night after rolling over district rival Butler County in a three-set sweep at ECHS (25-10, 25-8, 25-6). It also made the 19th consecutive set that Edmonson County has won, with each win being a sweep of the opponent. Coach Haley Garmon talked about the continued success of the program. "I mean, what do you say to these girls? They're doing so many things right and they're having fun." She also said that she feels confident about the remaining games on the schedule and mentioned the possibility of running the table on the rest of the regular season. She said there were weaknesses in the team, but discussed that off the record to keep that information from upcoming opponents. "We're going to be working on things in practice that will hopefully be enough to get us set for the district tournament." Last night's win made it number 20 and they still hold a number three ranking in Region 3 and stay number one in District 12. They improved to 20-9 on the season. They will have a short break from games with the next one scheduled at home on October 10th against Caverna. The following night, October 11th, is against Hart County and the annual Dig Pink Cancer Benefit game, which is also senior night. In addition to donating a portion of the proceeds to help a local family affected by cancer, the team will also honor one senior and her family, Dina Hollis. The girls will also have Spirit Night at Mis Amigos on Thursday, September 29, 2016 from 5pm-9pm with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the volleyball program. Edmonson Voice Sports Jonathon Simon, photos The Edmonson County High School Boys basketball team held a golf scramble fundraiser on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at the Cave Valley Golf Course on 31W. The winning team consisted of Kevan Alford, Brandon Prunty, Barry Woodcock, and Shaun Stice with an overall score of 55. Coach Mike McClintic was well pleased with the turnout. "We appreciate all the sponsors, teams, and volunteers that helped us with this event," he said. "We were able to raise almost $3,000 at the scramble. This will go a long way in helping our kids with some much needed equipment and shoes." The basketball team will begin official practices in a few weeks. Darren Doyle, story and photos The Lady Cats never gave the Barren County Trojanettes a chance last night at ECHS, defeating them 2-0 (25-3, 25-7). Edmonson County was too quick and strong for Barren County to have any sort of rhythm and simply was able to hit the ball hard in places where Barren County players weren't. The Lady Cats began the first set with a 13-0 run before Barren County was able to muster up a point on the board. EC quickly took care of business finishing the set on a 12-2 run. The second set was much more of the same as Edmonson County easily won yet again. The girls are on a roll of 7 straight wins, two shy of last year's winning streak of 9, which is the school record. More importantly, the girls have not just squeaked by with struggling wins, they have dominated their competition over the course of the winning streak as they have won 16 consecutive sets, something that's unheard of. "As a coach, you always try to continue finding things to work on, but with the way these girls are playing, I mean, what do you say?" said Coach Haley Garmon. "All we heard going into this season were things like, 'you've got big shoes to fill,' and 'how can you win with losing all the players you had last year?' And it's fair to say things like that, but I knew we had a good team and I knew what we were capable of."
The team has now improved to 19-9 on the season and looks to make it number 20 tonight as the girls host District rival Butler County, a team that has struggled mightily this year. Edmonson County is still ranked number one in District 12 and is number 3 in the third region. At this same point in the season last year, the 2015 team had the exact record of 19-9 and held identical rankings in both the district and region. "We're moving our feet well and it's something we've worked on all year. The girls are doing it now without being told and I think that's the difference. I told the girls that the winning will only get sweeter from this point on. We've proved all the doubters wrong," she said with a smile. Tonight's game against Butler County is a JV/V match with JV scheduled to begin at 5pm. View From Wildcat Alley: ECHS Golf Coach Nunnelee, Football Coach Smith, and Senior Emery Hunt9/23/2016

If there are still any doubters about this year's Lady Cat Volleyball team, they might want to rethink things. After a rough start to the season, the Lady Cats have figured out how to get back on track and have blasted their way through both the region and district rankings. They recently won the All A Third Region tournament and finished at the top of the All A Classic state consolation bracket. Over the last six games (all wins), the Lady Cats have won 14 sets in a row, sweeping all six teams. Every team wants to be playing at their best towards the end of the season, and with only five regular season games left, it seems as if the girls have found just the right recipe. Junior hitter Mikalya Lindsey said she credits overall teamwork along with solid team talent for their recent success. "We play well together and we've worked hard on what we all cover on the floor after having a hard time with it at the first part of the season," she said. Fans attending the games have also taken notice of the smiles on the court. "The team chemistry has grown throughout the year, but especially since the All A tournaments, both region and state. We've learned to play together and how to take constructive criticism for all of us to get better." Dina Hollis, the team's only senior, said she felt like the team was doing a better job of moving their feet, something they struggled with at the beginning of the season. She also feels like the team has really gelled as of late. "After the All A region and classic our team chemistry has really grown," she said. The girls defeated Glasgow on Monday 2-0, and swept both Trinity 3-0 in Whitesville and Grayson County in Leitchfield 3-0 last night. The girls are currently ranked number one in District 12 (5-1) have moved up to number two in Region 3 (8-3) and have improved to 18-9 on the season. Edmonson County is scheduled to play Barren County at home on Monday in a JV/V match. JV is scheduled to begin at 5:30pm. Edmonson Voice Sports
Candi Alford, photos The ECMS 8th Grade Football team has enjoyed an undefeated season so far this year in the Green River Valley Conference, and we will be hosting the GRVC championship game next Tuesday, September 27th in Brownsville at Wildcat Stadium at 6:00PM. The 8th grade team has already qualified for the state playoffs and according to team staff, the team has a great opportunity to win its second straight GRVC championship. The team is coached by Jerry Moore and Mickey Johnson. We will pass along state playoff information when it becomes available. Good Luck to our ECMS Wildcats! Darren Doyle, story Jerika Simon, photos The Edmonson County Lady Cats, the 2016 All A Region champions, traveled to the Optimum Sports Complex in Louisville, Kentucky this past Saturday, September 17 to compete in the All A State Classic state tournament. After playing well but falling to three talented teams in pool play, Monroe County, KY Country Day, and Allen Central, Edmonson County was forced into the consolation bracket of the tournament. The Lady Cats won over Washington County 2-0 (25-18, 25-17) in the first round of consolation play then faced Lexington Christian in the next round, also winning 2-0, (25-14, 26-24). This allowed Edmonson County to take on Bishop Brossart in the consolation bracket finals. They won 2-0, (25-18, 25-12) completing a run of winning six sets in a row and the consolation bracket title. Coach Haley Garmon discussed the difficulty of playing 6 complete games in one day, an amount that the Lady Cats don't play in an entire week, sometimes even two weeks. "We played very close and very well against a lot of good competition in pool play, then dominated good competition in the consolation bracket," Garmon said. "We did this while in a different atmosphere that most of our team had never been in before. We went further than any team in school history (in the All A Classic). The effort and endurance these girls showed in the finals tells exactly who wanted it more." This was the third time in school history for ECHS to appear in the tournament, an accomplishment that Coach Garmon said she had hoped would've generated more Edmonson County fans. "I wish more could have seen the desire and heart that these girls played with through six games with very brief breaks and some getting to bed late. Hard to appreciate just exactly what these girls accomplished if you didn't see it for yourself." There's no rest for the weary as the girls are scheduled to play three games this week, which has already begun with a win at Glasgow tonight (Monday, September 19). The Lady Cats defeated the Lady Scotties 2-0 (25-17, 25-22).
They are also scheduled to play district opponents Trinity on Tuesday in Whitesville and Grayson County in Leitchfield on Friday night. The Lady Cats are now 16-9 on the season. They are ranked fourth in Region 3 and are tied with Trinity for first place in District 12. Darren Doyle, story and photos The Edmonson County Wildcats struggled on both sides of the field in the 2016 Homecoming game against Metcalfe County which resulted in a 30-21 loss Friday night at Wildcat Stadium. The Wildcats struck first, scoring a touchdown and extra point halfway through the first for a 7-0 lead. A dry offensive spell and some holes in their second half defense set the tone for the rest of the game. "I thought defensively, we played pretty well in the first half," said Coach Nathan Smith. "We didn't give up a score until there was 0.1 seconds in the first half. Offensively, we just couldn't get it going. They're (Metcalfe) big up front, their linebackers flow downhill, and it just really threw us off the whole game." The Cats trailed 7-8 at the half and the homecoming festivities took the spotlight as 24 young ladies and their escorts took the field. The struggles continued for Edmonson County in the second half as Metcalfe scored two more touchdowns in the third, extending their lead 22-7 going into the fourth. The Wildcats made a press in the fourth with a Brayden Carey touchdown and a Caudill two-point conversion to make it 22-15 and a one possession game with 9:11 left, but the Hornets struck back with another touchdown. A two point conversion extended the lead to 30-15 with 7:07 left. A Caudill touchdown for the Wildcats cut Metcalfe's lead to 30-21 with 3:59 left in the game, but a failed two-point conversion attempt for Edmonson County kept it at a two possession game. The Wildcats couldn't mount a comeback as the Hornets took the homecoming win back to Metcalfe County. "We're playing good fourth quarters," Smith said. "Our offense looks pretty good late in the game. Tucker came out after a slow first half and really threw the ball well. The balls were on the money, our receivers caught them, and we looked pretty good there for a few minutes." In spite of a 40 minute rain delay to begin the game, Wildcat fans were plenty as they filled the stands and the track on homecoming night.
Edmonson County Wildcat Senior Daniel Caudill currently leads the state in 3A Football scoring with a total of 16 touchdowns and three, two-point conversions. The Wildcats will travel to Elizabethtown next Friday for a 7pm central game time start. You can listen to the live broadcast on WildcatsLive, only on EdmonsonVoice.com.
This week, we have an update from the Region 3 All "A" Volleyball Champs, hear from ECHS Football Coach Nathan Smith (via Scott Lindsey), and shine the Senior Spotlight on Dylan Waldrop. You'll want to hear all this!
Be sure to follow @JOscarJr, @WynCaudill, and @wildcatslive on Twitter! Darren Doyle, story and photos The Edmonson County Lady Cat Volleyball team cruised to their 5th win in a row last night, defeating Ohio County 2-0 at ECHS. This comes just after defeating district foe Trinity in three sets for Edmonson County's back-to-back All A Region Tournament win on Saturday. Trinity currently holds a number one ranking in the third Region. After losing seven seniors from last year's squad, finding a new head coach and coaching staff, and starting the season 0-4, Lady Cat fans were scratching their heads about the direction of this year's team. Since those four losses, the Lady Cats have gone 11-2 and have won 10 out of their last 11 matches, losing only to Breckinridge County, the number two-ranked team in Region 3. "There's more Comfort with players...there is trust," said coach Haley Garmon. "Players are learning what I want and our style of play. Our schedule started out difficult, which helped prepare us for tournament and district teams." The Lady Cats had little trouble with the Lady Eagles last night in the first set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. They kept Ohio County on their heels, never allowing them to get into a rhythm, winning 25-15.
The second set was closer as Ohio County fought their way through the Lady Cat offense. Edmonson County never established any big runs, but a couple of small runs sealed their win in the second set, 25-19, and the game. The Lady Cats are scheduled to face Butler County in Morgantown on Thursday in a District 12 match. They will also play in the All A State Tournament in Louisville on Saturday. "We still have things to work on," Garmon said. We had some opponents that were not playing well that we took advantage of and allowed us to play the things we practiced. We should get better because the potential is still there to get better." The Edmonson County Lady Cat Volleyball Team won the All A Third Region Title on Saturday at Frederick Fraize (Cloverport) for the second year in a row.
The Lady Cats defeated McClean County in the first game 25-15 and 25-16. District rival Whitesville-Trinity defeated Frederick Fraize set up a repeat of last year's final. Edmonson County won the first set 25-15 but Trinity recovered and dominated the Lady Cats in the second set 25-13. The third set went down to the wire and Edmonson County won 25-23. Junior Mikayla Lindsey, junior Caitlin Simon, and eighth grader Emma Woodcock were named to the All Tournament team. Junior Sierra Kenney was named to the All-Academic team. The win allows the girls to advance to the All A Region State Tournament this Saturday in Louisville. The Lady Cats take on Ohio County tonight at ECHS in a Varsity/JV/Freshmen game. The varsity game will be held first, starting at 5:30pm. Darren Doyle, story and photos Football fans got their money's worth last night at WKU's Houchens-Smith Stadium as the Edmonson County Wildcats took on the Warren East Raiders in an electric atmosphere. The game was supposed to be at the Raiders' new field, but because of ongoing construction at East the game was moved to the neutral site. The Wildcats found themselves in an early hole as the aggressive Raiders jumped off to 7-0 start on a 14 yard touchdown run and extra point only three minutes into the ballgame. The Raiders scored again with just over four minutes to go in the quarter on a three yard run and extra point to lead 14-0. Edmonson County finally got on the board with a two yard touchdown from Daniel Caudill with a little over four minutes into the second quarter. Brett Brannon's extra point made it 14-7. Brannon hobbled through most of the game as he fought to overcome an ankle sprain early on. East stopped the Wildcats' momentum with a 57 yard touchdown run. The extra point was good and East's lead was extended to 21-7. The Raiders answered that with a 34 yard touchdown pass and extra point to lead 28-7 with just over two minutes left in the half. The Wildcats scored on another Caudill touchdown, a three yard run with only 14 seconds left in the half. The extra point was no good and the EC went into the locker room down 28-13 at halftime. The second half was interesting to say the least as some strange officiating came into play with an inadvertent whistle and a flag on what appeared to be a sure touchdown for Brayden Carey. Coach Nathan Smith was furious as the Wildcats seemingly missed a scoring opportunity and a momentum boost. The official said throwing the flag was also his mistake.
There was also an issue with the same official claiming that Edmonson County had been playing with illegal footballs. He claimed that the footballs had to be either Rawlings or Spalding brand and Edmonson County had been using Wilson. Athletic Director Kyle Pierce disputed the official and said that the specific brands only applied in playoff games. The official told Pierce he'd be forced to report the balls to the KHSAA but the game continued in spite of the confusion. Caudill scored again in the third quarter but the extra point was no good as the Wildcats cut the lead to 28-19. East answered with another touchdown but failed on the two point conversion attempt with 1:52 left in the quarter. Brayden Carey caught a 31 yard touchdown pass from Tucker Cole to cut the Raider lead to 34-25 with just over a minute into the fourth. An onside kick and recovery from the Wilcats led to another touchdown and extra point as they inched their way to a two point deficit, 34-32 with 8:44 to go. Edmonson County attempted another onside kick and appeared to recover again but officials ruled possession to East. The Raiders sealed the deal on a 24 yard touchdown with 1:29 to go. The extra point made it a two possession game and the Wildcats were unable to recover, falling 41-32. Coach Nathan Smith said although the Wildcats showed an amazing effort in the second half, the slow first half was the difference in the game. "When you dig yourself a hole, sometimes it's just too much to get out of," Smith said. "We just didn't have good execution at times and it's something we're going to have to work on." Smith said the Wildcats' focus will be execution as they now look to bounce back at next week's homecoming game at Wildcat Stadium against Metcalfe County. The Wildcats are now 2-2 on the season. Darren Doyle, story and photos The Lady Cats continued their strong play last night at ECHS as they defeated the Allen County Scottsville Lady Patriots 2-0. Edmonson County came out with a strong 12-4 start, forcing Allen County to use an early timeout. The Lady Patriots quickly put up five unanswered points but it was as close as they'd come as the Lady Cats took the first set 25-16. The second set was a closer contest and Allen County showed their toughness by hanging with Edmonson County all the way. The Lady Cats struggled to create any rhythm and played catch up with the Lady Patriots throughout the set. After staying within a point or two of Allen County, EC took the lead at 17-16. A 8-4 run down the stretch propelled the Lady Cats to a 25-20 set win and the game. The Lady Cats have won 8 out of their last 9 contests, losing only to top ranked Breckinridge County last week in three sets. They are now 8-6 on the season. They are currently ranked number two in District 12 play and hold a number five ranking in the Third Region.
They are scheduled to play in the All-A Third Region Tournament tomorrow at Frederick Fraize (Cloverport) beginning at 11am.

She made headlines as an ECHS golfer and it's no different today, other than the blue on her uniform is that of the Midway Eagles. Freshman golfer Kayla Meredith helped her team to a first place victory at the Bluegrass Fall Invitational Tournament last week, fighting through a tough illness to do so. "I had strep throat with a fever of 102 with an ear infection during the Fall Invitational, so the conditions weren't very good for my first tournament with Midway, but I just had to deal with it," Kayla said with a laugh. She said playing in her first college tournament was much more difficult than high school matches. "The heat was almost unbearable each day but we were able to power through. One of the biggest struggles was the added distance. We played over 3,000 yards compared to less than 2500 in high school. I actually didn't play very well on the first day but was able to get through and recover on the second day with an 89." She said although things are much different on a college team than at ECHS, her Midway Eagles team is still a family. "It makes everything so much easier, especially the crazy transition that I've gone through just to be here." Kayla is a 2016 graduate of ECHS and the daughter of Granville and Kathy Meredith of Morgantown. Darren Doyle, story and photos Whether you call them Cougars, Grayson County, Swampies, or just "those other guys," if you're a Wildcat fan, it's one of the biggest games of the year. It's the annual "Tobacco Stick Bowl," the name of the Edmonson County/Grayson County football game, which has been a tradition for years. The trophy of which is an old fashioned tobacco stick painted in the colors of the winning team. After the Wildcats' 42-6 romping of the Cougars last night, the stick will remain blue and red, and in the hands of the Wildcats for the second straight year. The Wildcats got off to a rough start as they watched the Cougars control the entire first quarter and finding themselves in a 6-0 hole. After Wildcat fans anxiously watched the scoreboard in the first, they started to get their money's worth in the first play of the second quarter as Daniel Caudill scored on a turbo-fueled 34 yard touchdown run. Brett Brannon's extra point gave the Cats the 7-6 lead and from there they never looked back. The team also faced extra emotion on top of the heated rivalry as Caudill and his family dealt with the loss of his grandfather earlier in the week. "Obviously, my mind was on other things and I didn't get to settle down and focus like I usually do before game," Caudill said. "But when the game started, I knew the team needed me to step up so I started to get more and more zoned-in as the game went on." 'Zoned-in' is not a bad phrase, but it would be better described as "End-zoned-in" as Caudill finished the night with four touchdowns and 270 total yards, none bigger than a 95 yard run that he actually fumbled near the Wildcats' own end zone, but was able to recover and explode past the Grayson County defense for a TD. With 5:46 left in the first half, Sr. wide receiver Rheece Berkley caught an 18 yard pass from Tucker Cole to extend the lead to 14-6 with the help of Brannon's extra point. Caudill did it again on a 64 yard screen pass from Cole for another touchdown, and Brannon's extra point made it 21-6 with just over a minute before halftime. The score would remain the same as the teams headed for the locker room at the break. The Wildcats kept control of the third quarter as the Edmonson County defense kept the Cougars at bay and the score remained the same. Two minutes into the 4th, Caudill recovered a bobbled ball and blasted his way 95 yards down field for another touchdown. Brannon's extra point extended the lead to 28-6. Caudill said the long runs he had were credited to the Wildcat offensive line and blocking from wide receivers. "Once I was past them, my mentality was to finish the runs in the end zone," he said. "I just let instincts and athleticism take over from there." And his finishing in the end zone continued two minutes later as he scored his fourth touchdown of the night on a 67 yard run. Brannon's extra point (who was a perfect 6 for 6 on the night) made it 35-6. The Wildcats scored once more with 1:53 left in the game on Kenny Logsdon's 27 touchdown run. Brannon's extra point extended the lead to 42-6, which was the game's final score. "Winning the stick is all some people want us to do all year," Caudill said. "If we beat Grayson and lose every other game, people will say we had a great year. Being a senior, I knew I couldn't let the stick go back to Leitchfield and the team knew how big of a deal it was to keep it in Brownsville, so we took care of business from there." Coach Smith said he was happy with the outcome, with the exception of the first quarter. He noted Caudill's big night, but also credited Brett Brannon for exceptional defense, key tackles, and a great kicking night. 'Brett had some great kicks and he was everywhere tonight on defense. He had a really good night. And what can you say about Caudill? Even (as a coach) when you call something stupid, he makes you look smart. I mean, he fumbles a football in the end zone and goes 95 (yards) for a touchdown. He's just a heck of a football player." Smith also discussed Caudill's ability to overcome personal adversity and fill his role as a senior and team leader. "Not very many players could do what he did after the week he's had. He was in the field house earlier and I could tell he was down and you expect that. I'd be worried if he wasn't down. I was a little worried about him anyway, but he was able to put all that aside and he got a win against Grayson County." Smith discussed next week's game vs. Warren East, which will be played at WKU's Houchens L.T. Smith Stadium. "I think they're going to be fast," he said of East. "They've got some really good athletes and it's going to be on a big stage. It's going to be different for us, but different for them. Playing on turf, you never know how people are going to play." He said East has the skill to make the Wildcats pay if his team doesn't show up with proper fundamentals, but he's optimistic about the match up. Game time is at 7pm. You can listen to the game live with Scott and Bryan on WildcatsLive beginning at 6:45pm. |
