Darren Doyle, story and photos The Lady Cats never gave the Barren County Trojanettes a chance last night at ECHS, defeating them 2-0 (25-3, 25-7). Edmonson County was too quick and strong for Barren County to have any sort of rhythm and simply was able to hit the ball hard in places where Barren County players weren't. The Lady Cats began the first set with a 13-0 run before Barren County was able to muster up a point on the board. EC quickly took care of business finishing the set on a 12-2 run. The second set was much more of the same as Edmonson County easily won yet again. The girls are on a roll of 7 straight wins, two shy of last year's winning streak of 9, which is the school record. More importantly, the girls have not just squeaked by with struggling wins, they have dominated their competition over the course of the winning streak as they have won 16 consecutive sets, something that's unheard of. "As a coach, you always try to continue finding things to work on, but with the way these girls are playing, I mean, what do you say?" said Coach Haley Garmon. "All we heard going into this season were things like, 'you've got big shoes to fill,' and 'how can you win with losing all the players you had last year?' And it's fair to say things like that, but I knew we had a good team and I knew what we were capable of."
The team has now improved to 19-9 on the season and looks to make it number 20 tonight as the girls host District rival Butler County, a team that has struggled mightily this year. Edmonson County is still ranked number one in District 12 and is number 3 in the third region. At this same point in the season last year, the 2015 team had the exact record of 19-9 and held identical rankings in both the district and region. "We're moving our feet well and it's something we've worked on all year. The girls are doing it now without being told and I think that's the difference. I told the girls that the winning will only get sweeter from this point on. We've proved all the doubters wrong," she said with a smile. Tonight's game against Butler County is a JV/V match with JV scheduled to begin at 5pm.
