The Wildcats took the drive up Highway 259 to Leitchfield last night to seek revenge on county line rival Grayson County from a huge earlier loss in the season. Things were different this time around as the Cats were led by Austin "Cuban" Sowders with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Sowders, who as of last week was ranked 12th in the state in field goal percentage with 64.2%, shot 77% from the field, making 10 of 13 shots. Grayson County got off to a good start, leading the Cats 16-13 after the first quarter, but ECHS impressed by more than doubling their points in the second quarter, grabbing the 36-28 lead at halftime. The Cats were in charge from that point on, defeating the cougars 67-52 on the road. Hunter Buttram also added a solid performance with 16 points, (3-three pointers) 6 rebounds, and 3 assists, while Dakota Woodcock added 8 points and Chase Turley scored 6. Edmonson Voice Staff

The ECHS Lady Cats traveled to Grayson County to take on the Lady Cougars Friday, January 30. Ther was a nice crowd on hand as the Lady Cats struggled at the start to control the tempo of the game as they trailed 29 – 20 after the 1st quarter. Grayson County pushed it's lead over EC to 12 at the half 44 – 32. After three quarters, the score was Grayson County 59, EC 44. Grayson County's effective full court press for most of the game hindered the Lady Cats, and ECHS lost the rebounding match as well. Both factors led the Cougars to victory as the Lady Cats lost 73-56. Granville Meredith
Story and Photos This week, the guys spotlight Seniors Ceirra Whitman and Trevor Norris, and have their usual talks with Coach Hill and Coach Mac. Who is this week's Marathon Gas Card winner? Listen now to find out! The District Girl/Boy games vs. Butler Co that were postponed due to hazardous road possibilities in Butler Co last night have been rescheduled for Monday, February 2nd at 6pm at ECHS. The Little Dribblers will be performing in between the girls and boys games. The first game tip-off is scheduled for 6pm.
Despite multiple chances, the Wildcats dug themselves an early hole and could never quite get out as they fell 49-46 in the championship game of the Class A Regional Final at the Owensboro Sportscenter on Sunday.
ECHS started off horribly as they finished the first quarter down 11-3. Things hadn't improved much by halftime as they only managed to put 11 points on the board, falling behind 22-11 at the break. After three, the Cats had scratched into Hancock County's lead 31-24, but things really got interesting in the fourth as the Wildcats effort paid off into a run that cut the lead to 39-35 with 4:00 to go in the game. The difference continued to remain around 3-4 points for the next few minutes when the Cats cut it to 47-43 with 1:00 left. Hancock had possession but Hunter Buttram stole the ball and was fouled extremely hard. Many Cats fans felt that an intentional foul should have been called, which would have resulted in two shots and the ball back, but only a regular foul was ruled. Buttram hit both shots as the score went to 47-45 with :33 left. The Wildcats had to foul Hancock during the final seconds and after some free throws and a deficit of 49-46, the Cats had the ball with one second on the clock but couldn't get a play going as the buzzer sounded. Dakota Woodcock, Cole Bedwell, and Hunter Buttram were named to the All A Regional Tournament Team. Hunter Buttram led the Cats in scoring with 16, hitting four 3 pointers and going 4-4 from the free throw line. Dakota Woodcock added 7 points, Chase Turley helped the cause with 6 points, and Austin Sowders had 5 points. The tourney and snow dates have shifted the schedule around, so the Cats won't play again until Friday night, Jan 30th at Grayson County. Edmonson Voice Staff Jamie Carnes, Wyn Caudill, Contributors The Edmonson County Archery Team traveled to Taylor County Middle School for their annual archery competition. Wintry weather conditions didn't allow the team to take a school bus, so the participation was optional. Nevertheless, 25 of the 40 shooters were able to carpool and make it to the tournament. The team did well and 8th grader Trevor Roof achieved the team's high score of 274. Members of the EC Archery Team compete yesterday at Taylor County. (W. Ritter)
Edmonson Voice Staff This week, Senior Spotlight includes Brandi Lindsey and Cole Bedwell. The guys also catch up with Coach Mike McClintic and Coach Ted Hill. Don't forget - listen to find out if you were the winner in the Marathon Gas Card Giveaway...they'll give away another this week! At the start of the game the game officials didn’t realize they had started the game with a boy's-sized basketball instead of a girl's regulation ball, but with the intensity of ECHS, it probably wouldn't have mattered what size was used. The Lady Cats immediately jumped into full court pressure which Trinity struggled with the entire game. Trinity also didn’t have an answer to the Lady Cats offense. Senior Brandi Lindsey put up amazing numbers with a triple double, scoring 11 points, dishing out 12 assists, swiping 13 steals while also adding 10 deflections. Three other Lady Cats had double figure scoring: Jhonna Basil, Peyton Martin, and Caitlin Simon.
EC Stats Peyton Martin 11 points, 3 assists, 6 deflections, and 2 steals Jhonna Basil 11 points, 1 assist, 4 deflections, and 1 steal Caitlin Simon 10 points, 1 assist, 5 deflections, and 1 steal Team totals Free throws: 45% 2pt FG: 43% 3pt FG: 32% 20 assists, 32 rebounds, 38 deflections, 28 steals, and only had 8 turnovers. If you were looking for a tight ballgame against a district opponent last night, you were obviously disappointed. If it was a 40 point blowout you were looking for with the Lady Cats playing on cruise control, then you have reason to celebrate. It was never really a contest last night as the Lady Cats simply outmatched the Lady Raiders of Whitesville Trinity. ECHS started out strong, leading 25-10 after the first quarter, then after outscoring the Lady Raiders 19-6 in the second quarter, took a 28 point lead into the locker room at halftime. After three, the Lady Cats had increased the lead to 40, and it remained that way until the final buzzer sounded as the home team won easily, 67-27. Following the girls' heartbreaking loss from a three pointer at the buzzer, the boys hoped to get revenge on their district rival counterparts, the Grayson County Cougars on Friday night. No such luck was to be had, as the offense just never got going for the Wildcats.

Most of the time... Not so Friday night for the Lady Cats as they hosted Grayson County in a huge District match up.
After one quarter the Lady Cats were down 11 – 14 but managed to grab the lead at the halftime buzzer, 38 – 37. After the third quarter, EC had the lead 53 – 49, but this one would go down to the wire. With 1.1 seconds left on the clock in the 4th quarter, Grayson County had the ball underneath their own basket with the score all tied up, 65 – 65. The Lady Cougars drew up a play for one of their girls to set a screen to allow a shooter get open. It was a very hard screen as it sent one Lady Cat to the ground with no call. The play worked perfectly as the Grayson County shooter fired at the buzzer, nailing the three and sinking the dagger into the hearts of ECHS players, coaching staff, and fans. Caitlin Simon led all scorers with 22 points, 3 assists, 7 rebounds, and 1 steal. Athletic Director Kyle Pierce was well pleased with the three day event. He especially wanted to thank Scott Lindsey, Raffertys & Double Dogs restaurants for their tremendous help with the classic. "Anytime you put on an event with so many schools and teams, it takes a lot of help," Pierce said. "From our administrators, our girls and boys basketball coaches, our assistant football coaches, our announcers, our clock and scoreboard operator, our faculty that helped at the gate, and a few good friends, so many helped to make sure everything went smoothly." Pierce also said that preparations are already being made for the 2015 Classic. Other schools have been contacted and the event already has commitments. Pierce also encourages fans to continue supporting the Wildcats and Lady Cats. "Make sure to come out and watch our girls and boys for the rest of the year.
