Darren Doyle, story and photos: It was opening night for the Edmonson County Wildcat Football Team as they went head-to-head with arch rival Grayson County in the 2018 “Tobacco Stick Bowl,” a long-standing tradition for each team. The stick has remained in possession of the Wildcats since 2014. Edmonson County’s defense was amped up after the Cougars received the opening kick and forced a turnover on downs. The Wildcats took the ball over on Grayson’s 25 yard line, but were unable to score on the series. Sophomore Quarterback Jon Smith attempted a deep pass on the Wildcats next possession, but it was picked off by the Cougars’ QDarius McHenry who ran the ball for a Grayson County touchdown. The Cougars’ extra point was good and they took a 7-0 lead with 5:21 left in the first. The Wildcats were able to get on board on their next possession when Smith connected with Brock Stethen on a 12 yard pass for a touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt was no good for the Wildcats and they cut Grayson’s lead to 7-6 with just over two minutes to go in the first quarter. Grayson County wasn’t finished in the first. With time winding down in the quarter, Cougar quarterback Noah Bullock connected with McHenry on a 32-yard touchdown pass and the extra point was good. Grayson took a 14-6 lead going into the 2nd quarter. A sloppy second quarter from both teams resulted in no score and Grayson County led 14-6 at the half. On third down and 3 during the Wildcats first possession, Grayson County picked another pass from quarterback Jon Smith and ran it back for a 55-yard touchdown. The extra point extended Grayson’s lead to 21-6 with 10:30 to go in the third.
The Cougars weren’t finished by any means as the Wildcats continued their offensive struggles. With 1:13 left in the third, Bullock connected to Andrew Haycraft on a 52-yard touchdown pass. The extra point added to Grayson’s lead and the score was 35-6. The Cougars struck again in the fourth quarter as they played add-on with another three-yard touchdown run. The extra point extended the lead to 42-6 with 6:27 left in the ballgame. Edmonson County refused to fold up and got back into the end zone with 1:13 left in the game. Senior Jonathan Hollis pushed through with a 7 yard run. The Wildcats’ two-point conversion attempt was no good and they cut the Cougar lead to 42-12, which would be the final score of the game. Grayson County finished with 3 out 4 pass attempts for 88 passing yards and 228 rushing yards on 32 carries. Edmonson finished 10 out of 20 pass attempts for 112 yards and 84 yards on 31 rushes. The Wildcats also had 5 turnovers, which included four interceptions and one fumble. "For the first two and a half quarters, I thought we did an excellent job containing McHenry," said Head Coach Nathan Smith. "We hit him well, but the turnovers...In football, that will kill you more than anything. We had four interceptions and a fumble and that's just really hard to overcome against a good football team." Smith said the team will work to bounce back as they'll prepare to take on Warren East next Friday on the road. "We just got to get better. We'll be in here on Monday and labor a little bit on Labor Day. We'll watch some film and get ready for the Warren East Raiders next week." Edmonson County is now 2-1 on the season as Grayson County moves to 3-0.

Darren Doyle, story and photos: Members of the school district maintenance crew worked on the installation of a brand new scoreboard at the ECHS football field today, thanks to a generous donation from Coca Cola, who footed the bill for the addition. "The new scoreboard is much larger than our old one," said Supt. of Edmonson County Schools Patrick Waddell. "Our old one was about 14 years old I think, and it finally became beyond repair. This one should be ready to go for our home opener on Friday night." The Wildcats will take on Grayson County in the annual "Tobacco Stick Bowl" that will determine the winner of the coveted tobacco stick, which is currently in the possession of the Wildcats, and has been for the past three years.
Edmonson County is 2-0 on the season, as well as the Cougars, who are much improved from the last few years. The new sign accompanies other improvements at Wildcat Stadium, like a brand new press box and home bleacher seating, along with new goal posts. The new seating is approximately double (around 2,000) from the old wooden bleachers that had been in place since the field was constructed in the early 1980s. Kickoff Friday night is scheduled for 7pm. You can listen to the game live right here on the Edmonson Voice with the WildcatsLive crew. Darren Doyle, story and photos: The Lady Cats dropped their second district game of the season in a 3-0 sweep from Trinity at ECHS tonight. It was a rocky start in the first set as Trinity bolted out to a 12-4 lead. The Lady Raiders went on to take set one 25-9 from Edmonson County. The Lady Cats regrouped and defended much better in set two as they drew within one point at 10-9, but Trinity rallied with a run to take an 18-12 lead. The Lady Cats came within three at 18-21, but Trinity pulled away and took a 2-0 game lead with a 25-19 set two victory. Trinity simply overpowered Edmonson County in set three as they went on to take the third and final set 25-9 and notch their ninth win of the season. The Lady Cats fell to 2-9 on the year and 0-2 in district 12 play.
Edmonson County is scheduled to travel to Butler County on Thursday for a JV/V district match with JV beginning at 5pm. Edmonson Spoils Butler's Home Opener With 34-8 Win Darren Doyle, story and photos: Edmonson County improved to 2-0 on the season as they defeated the Butler County Bears 34-8 in Morgantown tonight. The Wildcats struck first in the first on sophomore quarterback Jon Smith's touchdown on the QB keeper. After two more touchdowns and an extra point in the second, Edmonson County was able to take a 19-0 lead at the half. The Wildcats scored again in the third and took a 26-0 lead into the fourth quarter. Edmonson County took advantage of Butler County turnovers throughout the night as the Bears had trouble controlling the ball.
EC scored another touchdown just over a minute into the final quarter to extend the lead to 34-0. Butler County was finally able to get on the board with a touchdown and two-point conversion in the final minutes of the game to make the final score 34-8. Edmonson County compiled 299 yards of rushing offense, converted on 6/10 passing opportunities for 140 yards of passing offense. Total yardage for EC was 439 compared to only 52 total offensive yards for the Bears. Coach Nathan Smith credited the offensive line for much of the success seen on the offensive side of things tonight. "They're doing a great job. For the most part, they're all young guys. We're starting three sophomores, a junior, and a senior," Smith said. "They're all big kids, they're all smart kids, they're able to see what front we're giving and kind of adjust from there. We go over two or three fronts with them every week and they're smart enough to see when the other team shifts around from one thing to another so we know who to block every time. Really proud of the offensive line and I know they're only going to get better from here." Smith also said he was pleased with the defense and hard, solid tackles. "I'm glad of how aggressive we are defensively and our linebackers did a really good job of playing really well inside." The focus now shifts on next Friday for the annual "Tobacco Bowl" with long-time rivals Grayson County as the Cougars travel to Edmonson County for the Wildcats' season home opener. "They have a heckuva running back and I know we're going to have to tackle him," Smith said. "I think we had too many penalties tonight early on, so I think if we can cut that out, we'll be fine next week." Edmonson County Finishes 1-4 In Apollo Summer Slam Tournament Darren Doyle, story and photos: Five games in two days is a tall task for any team at any level, and the Lady Cat volleyball team did just that as they competed in the Apollo Summer Slam Tournament held today at the Cliff Hagan Boys and Girls Club in Owensboro. Edmonson County started the tournament off with a win Friday night against Christian County during pool play. The Lady Cats finished set one 25-16 and set two 25-21. They then played a very tough Central Hardin team and fell in two sets (25-9), (25-12). Play resumed this morning as Edmonson County faced the hometown Daviess County Lady Panthers, where Edmonson fell in two sets, 25-15, and 25-10. The loss moved them to the loser's bracket where they then went up against Allen County Scottsville, a team that roughed them up pretty good on Thursday evening at home.
ACS looked like much of the same team today as they did last week; and while the Lady Cats got off to great start and held their own though much of the first set, the Lady Patriots came out on top 25-19. Allen County pushed through set number two as well (25-16), and notched the win. Edmonson County took on Hancock County in their final match of the tournament. The Lady Cats jumped out to a 5-0 lead but some miscommunication led to Hancock finding weak spots in the Lady Cat defense. The Lady Hornets went on to win set one 25-16 and simply dominated in set two. Edmonson County dug themselves a hole too deep out of which to climb as they struggled with a 16-0 deficit to start the set. Hancock County went on to win 25-6 and the game 2-0. Edmonson County fell to 2-7 on the season. They are scheduled to take on Grayson County on the road on Tuesday in a JV/V match beginning at 5pm. Edmonson County Dominates Colonels 36-6 Darren Doyle, story and photos: The Wildcats started the season with a 36-6 win over Caverna tonight on the road as many new faces began new roles after last year's departed seniors left plenty of openings. Edmonson County was able to get into the end zone first as Sophomore quarterback Jon Smith connected with James Hollis for a 20-yard touchdown pass. Brock Stethen was able to convert on another pass from Smith for a two-point conversion as EC took an 8-0 lead with just over two minutes to go in the first quarter. A catch by Chance Lucas brought the Cats right to the goal line with only 17 seconds left in the half and Senior Kenny Logsdon was able to push through with a two-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt was no good but EC took a 14-0 lead at the half. The Wildcats struck again in the third quarter as Sophomore Isaiah Johnson's interception put the ball back in Edmonson's hands. That was followed by as a face mask penalty against Caverna which pushed Edmonson right at the goal line. Jonathan Hollis was able to run the ball in for another touchdown. Smith connected again on the two-point conversion with a catch from Jonathan Filback and Edmonson extended their lead to 22-0. After a fumble recovery by the Wildcats, Edmonson's Grayson Perdue ran the ball for another touchdown. Matthew Shaw converted on the two-point conversion with a run of his own as EC added to their lead, 30-0 with 4:15 to go in the third. It was Shaw again with 1:21 left in the third on another touchdown run. The failed two-point conversion attempt from the Wildcats put EC up 36-0. Caverna was finally able to get on the board in the fourth with a touchdown but couldn't kick the extra point for a final score of 36-6. The crowd was stunned in a scary moment for the Colonels when Caverna sophomore Colton Riley took inadvertent contact as an Edmonson County defender got his finger caught in Riley's facemask in an arm tackle attempt. Riley was sprinting down field and the contact pulled his neck awkwardly. He hit the ground and laid motionless for a few minutes. An ambulance drove on field and he was taken away on a stretcher. Coaches said Riley was alert and moving his hands and fingers. He was given a standing ovation from fans on both sides of the field as he was taken away.
Head Coach Nathan Smith said he was proud of how his team performed tonight with the win. Smith discussed preparing for Butler County next week. "Butler County has an all-new coaching staff, so I've got some questions about what we're going to see. I know they're going to be ready for us...it seems like we've played Butler County more than any other team in the history of football, so it's a big rival. I feel it's as big of a rivalry as our Grayson County game, really." Smith added that even though questions remain about the Bears, he knows they will be well coached and ready to play. Edmonson County is 1-0 on the season and is scheduled to take on Butler County next Friday at 7pm in Morgantown. Darren Doyle, story and photos: The Edmonson County Lady Cats fell to 3-1 on the season after getting swept by Allen County Scottsville in two sets at ECHS on Thursday night. The Lady Patriots grabbed the first three points of the set before Edmonson could get on the scoreboard, and Allen County's offense continued the pace and took a 6-1 lead. Edmonson began chipping away and climbed back in, tying the score at 11-11, but the Lady Patriots stepped on the gas and finished the set on a 14-3 run, taking set one 25-14. Edmonson County had some miscues during set two that allowed the Lady Patriots to take a 9-2 lead, which forced an Edmonson County timeout. Allen County Scottsville took advantage of some miscommunication by the Lady Cats and took a commanding 18-5 lead and they never looked back. Allen County went on to win set two 25-13 and the game (2-0) as they improved to 2-2 on the season.
Edmonson County is scheduled to head to Owensboro tomorrow evening for the Apollo Summer Slam Tournament in Owensboro. Romero Pitches Seven Shutout Innings On Edmonson County Senior Food Pantry Night Darren Doyle, story and photos: Right handed pitcher Tommy Romero led the way for a 1-0 Bowling Green Hot Rods win over the West Michigan Whitecaps Wednesday, August 8th, during Edmonson County Senior Food Pantry night at Bowling Green Ballpark. Romero went seven innings with five strikeouts, allowing only five hits and one walk as his record improved to 9-3 on the year. Right hander Tyler Zombro was credited for his fourth save of the year as he went the final two innings. Bowling Green notched their only run of the game when infielder Justin Bridgman singled in the fifth. He scored on center fielder Carl Chester's triple, and it would be the only run needed to back Romano's pitching performance.
Bowling Green is scheduled to continue the series against West Michigan tonight at BG Ballpark with first pitch slated for 6:35pm. Darren Doyle, story and photos: There will be several changes at Wildcat Stadium this year as Edmonson County gets set to begin their new football season, including a new press box and home seating, new goal posts, and a brand new quarterback. Also absent will be around 80% of last year's offense, according to coach Nathan Smith, who enters his third season as Wildcat head coach. "Last year's group was a special group for me because that was a tight-knit group of kids," said Smith. "We switched some things up and you're going to see some different things, but I think we have a core group of leaders coming back, some of those guys on our offensive line." Leading that line is senior Logan Hagan, who Smith said just measured in at 6'6" and 330lbs. "He's actually down about 30lbs from last season and he's feeling pretty good," said Smith. "Being hurt last year set him back a little, but he's worked hard. You don't see too many of his size in high school. We look for him to have a big year and hopefully look at playing at the next level." Smith also said the team will rely on returning running back Kenny Logsdon for offense as well as twin brothers Jonathan and James Hollis. One of the biggest differences fans will likely notice is a new quarterback, which is sophomore John Smith. "He loves to throw deep and he's done really well so far. He's gotten stronger. He's around 6'1" and 180 pounds, so we'll see how things work out." Smith said district play will likely have a similar look to last season with Elizabethtown being favored. Larue County will look to replace 26 departed seniors from last year while Hart and Adair Counties round out the district.
Coach Smith also said that he's continuing to settle into his role as head coach and is looking forward to this season. "I was really overwhelmed in my first year," he said with a laugh. "There were plenty of things I didn't expect, but last year was a little easier as things got into a better flow, and this summer has been great. It's definitely been my favorite summer so far and hopefully that's a good sign for things to come this season." The Wildcats will host Allen County in a scrimmage game at home this Thursday, August 9, at 6pm. They open their regular season on the road for the first two games of the year, first at Caverna on August 17th, then Butler County the following week on August 24th. They are scheduled to have their first regular home season game on August 31st against rival Grayson County. Game times will be at 7pm. The WildcatsLive-Edmonson Voice Crew will carry the live broadcasts of each game. Darren Doyle, story and photos: The Lady Cats swept the Glasgow Lady Scotties 2-0 (25-9, 25-19) in the first official game of the season tonight at ECHS. While the team is relatively young and inexperienced, Edmonson County was able to get the first set headed in the right direction early, jumping out to a 3-0 start. After a couple of quick points from Glasgow, EC scored the next 5 to take an 8-2 lead. Edmonson County then went on a 9-3 run to extend their lead to 17-5 and Glasgow never recovered. Set number two saw a little more life from the Lady Scotties as they stayed within an arm's reach early. Edmonson County held an 8-6 lead when they went on a 10-1 run that extended the lead to 18-7, which prompted a timeout from Glasgow. The Lady Scotties held their ground out of the timeout but Edmonson County went on another run to control the score 23-15. Glasgow then caused some trouble for the Lady Cats as they scored the next five points. Head Coach Bridgett Poteet called a timeout as the Lady Scotties began their climb back as EC led 23-19. Edmonson County scored the next two points to win the set and the game, giving not only several team members their first ever varsity win, but also the first career win for Coach Poteet.
The Lady Cats are 1-0 on the season and are scheduled to take on Warren East away on Tuesday, August 7th at 5pm in a Freshman/JV/Varsity match up. Darren Doyle, story and photos: The Edmonson County Lady Cat Volleyball squad officially kicked off their home season with a series of scrimmage games tonight that featured matches from the freshmen and JV teams, along with the varsity team taking on a group of alumni players. The alumni team was made up of several of last year's seniors, who brought home a District 12 title. The free event allowed Lady Cat fans to get a glimpse of what is to come this season as the team is a much different group than last year. Eight seniors from last year left huge voids on this season's court but this year's group held their own with last year's district champs. First year head coach Bridgette Poteet said she was happy with the effort put forth tonight by her team.
"Based on what I've seen in practice and what I saw tonight, I'm very well pleased with how the girls did," she said. "When the girls are communicating well, they're playing well and we obviously want that to continue. There were times when things kind of fell apart, and those were times when they weren't talking." Even though there are four seniors on this year's squad, three of them have no varsity experience and one has very little. The team will rely heavily on sophomore Emma Woodcock, the only returning starter, who has started since she was in 8th grade. Several sophomores and freshmen will see plenty of varsity time and the JV and Freshmen teams will be made up of those in 7th, 8th, and 9th grade. "We're learning, but that's ok," said Coach Poteet. "We did some really good things tonight, and our kids are having fun. There's no use in playing if you can't have fun and enjoy the game." The first regular season game is scheduled for Monday, August 6th at home against Glasgow. JV action will start at 5:00pm with the Varsity match beginning immediately after. |
