Darren Doyle, story and photos: The Edmonson County Lady Cat Volleyball squad officially kicked off their home season with a series of scrimmage games tonight that featured matches from the freshmen and JV teams, along with the varsity team taking on a group of alumni players. The alumni team was made up of several of last year's seniors, who brought home a District 12 title. The free event allowed Lady Cat fans to get a glimpse of what is to come this season as the team is a much different group than last year. Eight seniors from last year left huge voids on this season's court but this year's group held their own with last year's district champs. First year head coach Bridgette Poteet said she was happy with the effort put forth tonight by her team.
"Based on what I've seen in practice and what I saw tonight, I'm very well pleased with how the girls did," she said. "When the girls are communicating well, they're playing well and we obviously want that to continue. There were times when things kind of fell apart, and those were times when they weren't talking." Even though there are four seniors on this year's squad, three of them have no varsity experience and one has very little. The team will rely heavily on sophomore Emma Woodcock, the only returning starter, who has started since she was in 8th grade. Several sophomores and freshmen will see plenty of varsity time and the JV and Freshmen teams will be made up of those in 7th, 8th, and 9th grade. "We're learning, but that's ok," said Coach Poteet. "We did some really good things tonight, and our kids are having fun. There's no use in playing if you can't have fun and enjoy the game." The first regular season game is scheduled for Monday, August 6th at home against Glasgow. JV action will start at 5:00pm with the Varsity match beginning immediately after.
