Edmonson Voice Sports: The annual Lady Cat Volleyball "Dig Pink" cancer benefit game is scheduled for Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at ECHS against Warren East. Each year, the Lady Cats and their opponent wear pink socks or a similar uniform item to show support in the fight against cancer. In addition, the game raises funds for one Edmonson County family who is either currently fighting cancer or has recently been through the fight. This year's beneficiary is Tracy Meredith, a retired teacher and coach for Edmonson County Schools. The Lady Cats will host a silent auction at the game where 100% of the proceeds, along with additional donations and concession proceeds will be donated to Tracy's family to help with his current fight against Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Known as "Mr. Meredith" to some and "Coach" to many others, he began working as a teacher in 1978 where he taught in the mornings at Chalybeate Elementary School and at Kyrock Elementary in the afternoons. Throughout his teaching career, Tracy taught Health and Physical Education at the Elementary, Middle, and High School levels. He began coaching at Edmonson County Middle School where he led the boys football teams for 25 years and the boys basketball teams for 22 years. In addition to teaching, Tracy worked summers as a cave guide at Mammoth Cave National Park from 1979-1989. He retired from ECMS in 2006 where he soon became a regular at the local Dairy Queen for morning coffee with friends, as well as a fierce competitor on the golf course at Shady Hollow. After experiencing health difficulties for four years, he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma of the lung this past August and began chemotherapy at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. He is currently receiving treatment from the University of Kentucky Hospital. The Lady Cats (8-16) will take on the Warren East Raiders (14-14) in a Freshman/Varsity/JV format match with freshmen starting at 5pm.
Each Lady Cat player will have the opportunity to play for either in honor of someone who is currently battling or has beaten cancer, or in memory of someone who has passed while battling cancer. Those names will be called during the ceremony and survivors in attendance will be recognized. Featured silent auction items will be a host of products and services donated for the event, which include three UK men's basketball tickets to an exhibition game against Georgetown College at Rupp Arena on Sunday, October 27th and two tickets to the Tennessee Titans vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers game, also on October 27th. Donation items for the event are still being accepted.
