Simon's performance not only included 26 points, but 10 rebounds, 5 steals, and 4 assists. "I'm so glad that Caitlin Simon's on my team," said Coach Kevin Jackson. "She's a warrior. I get aggravated at her every once in a while because I expect so much out of her. I try to tell her that. If I didn't think she couldn't do it, I wouldn't say anything." Simon was all smiles after the game. She discussed not only this game, but also her team role and expectations for this season. "I knew it was going to be my senior season and I needed to be a scorer for this team; that's been one of my roles for the past three years," she said. "Going into it, I just said I'm going to do the best that I can to leave it out there every game, and with the team that I have, they make it really easy." She also said that the scoring record was on her mind before tonight's game, but realized that she would have to get past the mind games and focus on winning a district game on the road. "I told Coach Jackson that I just needed to play my game, forget about it, and if I get it, I get it, if not, it would probably be on Friday." Simon tied the record after and sinking the second of two free throws with around two minutes to go. She claimed the record after her next made free throw to surpass Stephanie Dennison's record of 2,390 points. Simon went on to hit one more during the game to stand sit at 2,392 points. Peyton Martin finished with 15 points and 6 assists, Chanley Logsdon added 7 points and 5 rebounds, and Lauren Ballance added 2.
The Lady Cats improve to 22-4 on the season. "She makes everybody on the floor better," said Jackson of Simon. "That's what a great player does, and Caitlin Simon is a great player. The all-time leading scorer in Lady Cat basketball history; what an honor, and I don't know if the record will ever be broken, I really don't." Edmonson County secured the number one seed in the district 12 tournament that begins in two weeks. They are scheduled to take on Ohio County on Friday, Feb. 9th at home in a girl/boy doubleheader beginning at 5:30pm.
