Darren Doyle story Laney Meredith photos "Homers Radio," a regional podcast based out of Owensboro focusing on Region 3 Sports put together the first annual "3rd Region All-Star Game," held at Owensboro Apollo this past Saturday, March 26. Sponsored by Owensboro area businesses, the event was a benefit for charities like the Taylor Widmer Memorial Fund. Taylor was a football player and wrestler for Apollo High School who was killed in an auto accident in 2014, just before the start of his junior year. Other charities such as St. Benedict's, Heartford House, and Puzzle Pieces also received donations as well. ECHS Senior Cuban Sowders said the event was a great experience. "It was fun playing with other players from our districts, especially the guys we got along with," he said. "We just went out to play ball for a great cause and have fun." Hunter Buttram, another ECHS senior, said it was great playing alongside guys he was used to playing against. "Cuban and I were so fortunate to get to represent Edmonson County one more time," he said. "We also got to end things with a win." Buttram and Sowders teamed up with players from Grayson, Whitesville Trinity, Butler County, Breckinridge, and Meade counties. Sophomore Lady Cat Caitlin Simon was the only representative from Edmonson County for the girls' team. Over 500 people were in attendance which raised over $2,000 for the charities. A member of Homers Radio said "This is was the 1st annual 3rd Region All-Star Game, but we hope to continue each season and make it bigger and better every year."
