Darren Doyle, story: Madison Doyle, photos: A school record for wins in a single season was tied last night at ECHS as the Lady Cats defeated Greenwood 66-56 on the last regular game of the season. Edmonson County also celebrated 2017 Senior Night, which was an emotional night for senior Maddie Cline as well as the rest of the team. The win allowed the Lady Cats to improve to 22-7 on the year, the number of regular season wins only done twice before, in 1994 and '95, both of which the Lady Cats brought home the district championships under coach Kevin Jackson. The Lady Cats led the entire game and held a 28-21 advantage at halftime; however, Greenwood refused to go quietly and cut the lead to two with a big run during the third as they found open lanes to the basket. Edmonson County was able to withstand the run by the Lady Gators and held on for the win, which was a momentum booster for the Lady Cats as they prepare for the District 12 Tournament that is scheduled to begin on Monday in Morgantown. "Any time you only have one senior, it's very, very tough and I'm so proud of Maddie Cline," said Coach Jackson. "There's times she got frustrated and I know how that feels. But she hung with us and I thought she played really well under the circumstances and emotions. What I was most proud of is that our kids wanted to get the win tonight for Maddie. Moreso than tying the school record of 22 wins; we didn't even talk about that. They wanted to get the win for our lone senior, and that tells you what kind of kids we've got." Peyton Martin led the offense for the Lady Cats with 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. Caitlin Simon added 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Katlin Collins put up 9 points, Skylar Lewis had 8, Maddie Cline added 3, and Lauren Ballance had 2. The Lady Cats are scheduled to take on Butler County in the second game of the first round of the District 12 Tournament on Monday, February 20, 2017 at 7:30 at Butler County High School. The winner will advance to the finals on Thursday and also the Region 3 Tournament. The losing team will see it's season come to an end. The Lady Cats' last district championship was in 1998, also under Coach Kevin Jackson.
