Cold Bats Result in 3-0 Loss Darren Doyle, story: Alyssa Doyle, photos: The Lady Cats could only manage three hits last night at James Woodcock field at ECHS as they fell to Grayson County 3-0 in their first district game of the season. District play was set to begin last week but rain and soggy field conditions delayed that until Tuesday evening. Edmonson County had not played since their spring break tournament in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, that ended on April 5th and saw the Lady Cats go 3-2 on the trip. While the temperature was a nice 83 degrees at first pitch, the EC bats were not quite as warm. Grayson County put a run on the board in the top of the first, after a couple of singles and a sacrifice bunt to take a 1-0 lead. Edmonson County held Grayson scoreless in the second and pitcher Julie Norris started off the bottom of the inning with a single to center. Despite a couple of singles and a stolen base, the Lady Cats could not cross the plate in the inning. The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the Lady Cougars until the top of the 6th inning, when a couple of Edmonson County errors resulted in another run by Grayson. Another Grayson County single plated another run to increase their lead to 3-0. Edmonson County had a good opportunity to generate some runs in the bottom of the sixth as the Lady Cats reached on back-to-back Cougar errors to put runners on the corners but each of the base runners were thrown out as they attempted two different plays at home plate. After giving up two singles to start the top of the 7th, the Lady Cats held Grayson County scoreless, but went quietly in the bottom of the 7th with two groundouts and a strike out looking for a final 3-0 score in favor of the Lady Cougars. Jolee Vincent, Julie Norris, and Emma Price all went 1-3 at the plate. Kaylee Ann Sanders drew the only walk for the Lady Cats. Pitcher Julie Norris went the full 7 innings for Edmonson County and gave up one earned run on 6 hits, struck out 5, and walked only one.
Grayson County's Ellie Bratcher (8th grade) struck out 11 Lady Cat batters in 7 innings. Edmonson County fell to 6-9 on the season and 0-1 in District 12 play. They are scheduled to take on Trinity (Whitesville) on Thursday at home in another district match beginning at 6PM.
