Darren Doyle, story-Madison Doyle, photos: A strong first half paved the way for the Lady Cats' 60-46 win over Bardstown on day two of the Rafferty's/Double Dog's Caveland Classic yesterday at ECHS. Led by point guard Peyton Martin, who finished with 24 points, 3 assists, and 3 steals, and guard Caitlin Simon who added 21 points and 5 rebounds, the Lady Cats were able to find open lanes as they drove to the basket for high percentage shots. The Lady Cats jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the first quarter and extended their advantage to 35-15 at the half. While Martin and Simon handled the majority of the scoring, it was a team effort as several Lady Cats got in on the action with big shots when they were needed, scrapping for loose balls, and forcing turnovers with solid defense and deflections.
Bardstown made a couple of large runs in the second half with a full-court trap press, as they cut a 20 point deficit to 9, but the Lady Cats figured out how to break it which led to more layups at the basket. The remaining box score showed: Collins 7 (5 rebs), Lewis 5, Alexander 3. The Lady Cats improve to 8-4 on the season with their third win in a row and are scheduled to take on Barren County in the final game of the classic today at 5:30pm. Edmonson County notched a 56-41 win over Barren earlier in the season on the road. The WildcatsLive pregame show will start around 5:15pm on EdmonsonVoice.com.
