Darren Doyle, story: Madison Doyle, photos: The Daviess County Lady Panthers had no answer for Edmonson County senior Caitlin Simon and the rest of the Lady Cats as they fell to EC, 70-45 on Tuesday night. Simon led the way for Edmonson County with 36 points, 23 of which coming in the first half. Edmonson County got off to a bit of a slow start, allowing Daviess to have some open looks at three pointers as they were a little sluggish on the defensive end. They trailed the Lady Panthers 16-17 after the first quarter. Daviess hit a couple of threes early in the second which prompted a timeout from Coach Kevin Jackson. Whatever was discussed in the huddle was effective, as the Lady Cats went on to outscore Daviess 20-9 in the quarter and Edmonson took a 27-25 lead at the half. The Lady Cat defense caused all sorts of trouble for Daviess County and at one time, the Lady Panthers saw five straight trips end in five straight turnovers.
Simon found lanes to the basket all night and also knocked down three 3-pointers. She finished with four rebounds, four steals, and an assist. She was also 1-1 from the free throw line. Peyton Martin also impressed with 17 points and 7 assists. "After that first quarter, I thought our defense was excellent," said Coach Jackson. "We kept pressure on them, and it's not always about steals. They had four walking calls on them in the second quarter. When you keep pressure on a team, they don't relax and I felt like they (Daviess) never were able to relax." Jackson also talked about the performance from Caitlin Simon. "She's an all-region player. That's why she was first team all region last year and should be player of the year, I think, in the third region this year." Jackson also went on to compliment Martin, Collins, and another team effort, saying "it takes more than just one or two kids to shine." The remaining box score is: Collins 8, Logsdon 3, Ballance 2, Harrison 2, Vincent 2. The Lady Cats will take on Grayson County on the road on Friday, Dec 8th in a girls' JV/V match beginning at 5:30pm. There is no game broadcast scheduled for that night. The girls improve to 3-0 on the season.
