Austin Sowders scored 14 points to lead Edmonson County to a 65-58 victory over Ballard Memorial during their first day of play in the Rafferty's/Double Dog Caveland Classic on Tuesday. On a two-pointer from Dakota Woodcock, (game MVP) ECHS sealed their victory in the fourth quarter.
Leading 29-26 at the half, Edmonson County pulled ahead early in the game. The Cats looked confident in the third quarter, scoring 19 points. Sowders had a hot hand, shooting 67% (4-for-6) from the field while also shooting 67% (6-for-9) from the free throw line. Daniel Caudill added 4 points, six rebounds and one steal. Bailey Board (7 points) and Trevor Norris (6) each had multiple three-pointers. Three other players were also in double figures as Woodcock had 12 points, while Hunter Buttram and Chase Turley added 11 points each. Buttram also contributed while grabbing six rebounds and a steal. The ECHS Lady Cats, now 6-4, were just as impressive as they also won 64-50 over Ballard Memorial. Edmonson County was in control the entire game and was led by Brandi Lindsey with 15 points while Caitlin Simon added 12. Madelyn Taylor was a valuable contributor and Tori Browning was named the game MVP. ECHS Athletic Director Kyle Pierce was pleased with the first day of the classic. He said that the competition was well balanced and it brought good match ups. "Tuesday's games should be just as competitive," he said. "First will be undefeated Simon Kenton against Muhlenburg County (7-3) in girls action at 11:00am. Our boys will take on Warren East at 5pm and our girls team play Madisonville (6-2) at 7:00pm." The boys game will be a rematch from the gut-wrenching, half-court buzzer beater loss at Warren East last week. Athletic Director Pierce encourages everyone to come early and enjoy all the games for a low price. "I also want to send out a special thanks to the girls and boys booster clubs for helping feed all the teams today." General admission is $8.00 for all day and Edmonson County season ticket holders are allowed admission at no cost. Edmonson Voice Staff, With Granville Meredith, Sports Contributor
